A question I get a lot and that unfortunately doesn’t have an easy answer, the simple truth is just: commit to one!
Personally I will usually start with photos to get my “safety shots” and then switch to video if there is time for it. However if I have a certain shot in mind for either video or photo, I will prioritise that.
I’m at a point where I can see long before I take the photo, if it’s a situation that has potential for a photo I haven’t taken before or if it’s a situation I’d rather get a video of. For example if the light, angle or background is not to my liking for photo, I will usually do video instead to still capture the behaviour and movement of the animal 🦒
In this situation I choose video because I’ve long waiting for a chance to get a video of the elephant throwing dust on itself, and luckily was covering the photo part!
All I can say is that it’s up to you to decide if you want a photo or a video of a specific situation, and all the advice I can give you is to commit to one at a time! Do not switch between them in the middle of the action because you will end up with neither. Trust me, I’ve tried and tested 🙈
