Along with the political pressure to pave the remaining part of the BR-319 highway, land-grabbing, forest fires and deforestation are intensifying. 🔥
Journalists from the Brazilian newspaper,, traveled the 890 km of the still unpaved middle section and spoke to affected communities. The road cuts through preserved forest and Indigenous lands. 🌳🌳
Land grabbing has intensified, and land-for-sale signs are scattered along the edges.🪧🪧
Communities in the Lago do Capanã Grande Extractive Reserve are experiencing harassments and threats. They are experiencing increasing pressure from land grabbers.
«There used to be plenty of chestnuts and açaí berries. People took care of them, made paths to the chestnut trees. But they cut everything down,“ says José Nei Nogueira, 46, a farmer who lives with his children in Muanense. “And the animals we hunt are hard to find.»
Harassment over land is increasing in one of the most contested areas of the BR-319 highway, even before the paving has begun. With the Brazilian Congress overturning Lula’s veto against changes to the environmental licensing last week, these types of road projects can advance much faster.

Na década de 90, já não havia mais asfalto no trecho do meio, e a conexão por terra entre duas grandes capitais amazônicas –Manaus com 2 milhões de moradores, Porto Velho, com 460 mil– acabou abandonada.
A rodovia pode ser um gatilho decisivo para ocupação, grilagem e desmatamento de uma área ainda bastante preservada, considerada decisiva para o bioma amazônico. Por isso, a pavimentação dependeria da consolidação do sistema de conservação de grandes blocos de floresta, por meio de parques sob a responsabilidade da gestão federal. Os ramais ( estradas secundárias que adentram a floresta ) se multiplicaram antes mesmo da chegada do asfalto, e o desmatamento explodiu nos anos finais do governo de Jair Bolsonaro. Nos últimos anos, a rondonização na parte mais ao sul da via vem ganhando ares de consolidação, com grilagem, intenso comércio de terras –placas com anúncios estão espalhadas pelas margens do trecho do meio– e avanço da devastação. Rondonização é um termo que faz alusão à maneira como Rondônia foi ocupada, com vastas e aceleradas perdas de floresta para dar espaço a pasto e boi.
Áreas de assentamento foram ocupadas de forma criminosa, e comunidades tradicionais viradas para o rio Madeira estão encurraladas pela expansão da grilagem movida a partir da BR-319. São comuns os relatos de ameaças de morte e de tomadas de territórios, a partir da derrubada do que antes já representou uma importante fonte de renda a ribeirinhos, como castanheiras e açaizeiros.
