Merci! So grateful for my first visit to the so called African continent. I’m still in awe, processing the beauty, the power, the intensity and the colonial wounds in the territory 🌍
Bonding with dear old and new friends and colleagues exploring the performing arts ecosystem presented by the festival and market was blissful ☀️
The challenges faced by the local artists and cultural workers, as well as the ones experienced when migrating to the colonial European land are not minor. The struggle is real. This visit allowed me to get grater insights of what it means to be in Europa when you are not a whyt body, coming from a colonized land. The fact that we carry it gracefully doesn’t mean that it’s not harsh☄️
Huge respect and congrats Masa organizers and participants. Thanks for this invite. It gave me life. Can’t wait to go back to the ancestral origins of humanity🖤

Presented in Glasgow in partnership with Tramway. Martha Hincapié Charry’s work for Rise Festival is realised in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut Glasgow.
The project explores a shocking reality: Although indigenous peoples make up only 5% of the world’s population, they protect 80% of the world’s remaining biodiversity.
In a space where you are invited to walk barefoot on the earth, HECATOMB II challenges the “disconnection from nature” that has led to today’s climate crisis. It is a ritual of resistance against extractivism (the exploitation of natural resources, a decolonial, ecofeminist reflection on the Earth as a woman. A woman subjected to abuse and exploitation by large corporations, but at the same time the one who holds the keys to our survival.
Through traditional dance, song and ceremony, this performance is more than just art; it is a spiritual intervention and a call for indigenous soveranity in the face of the sixth mass extinction.
HECATOMB II revolves around messages from 3 native communities: from the Colombian desert, from Long Island, New York (USA), and from the Amazon rainforest. These form the backdrop of the video installation that is intertwined with a live by Martha – a performance that takes a clear stand and raises awareness about the ongoing spiritual/ecological crisis.

If you want to know the current state of the Earth, take a look at the state of women.
If you want to know the current state of women, look at the Earth.
We are a mirror, we are the same feminine entity from which resources are extracted and abused.
We don’t fight for nature, we are nature defending itself.
Is care, tenderness, sweetness too much to ask for?

Members of the native Kinship Doobai Dancers (KDD) performed three dances: First Sun, Acknowledgment, and Possum. Through the Acknowledgment dance, Country was recognised, reminding everyone that movement, culture, and place are intertwined on Bundjalung land, at the so called Australia.
I’m so grateful with all participants for holding such a healing powerful space and with and for facilitating this gathering.
Miss you all.
