Francesca Sostar is a photographer & director based in Los Angeles.
Francesca went to school with the intention of becoming a filmmaker, as she had always had an interest in visual storytelling. However, about 8 years ago, while visiting family over the holidays, she stumbled upon her Dad’s Nikon F2. “Since then, I have become obsessed with implementing the cinematic storytelling process into my still photography, finding a new way to frame the narratives I wanted to tell.”
In Francesca’s words, “I am drawn to the razor’s edge between reality and the subconscious. While traditional documentary work interests me, I’m most compelled by the trenches of our internal reality. The way a feeling or a memory lives in our heads. I want to bridge that gap, taking those internal landscapes and building them back into existence.”
This discovery led to Francesca’s first solo show, “Scarlet” which centered around the artist’s own personal memories recreated with subjects to which she related. The work explored themes of dysphoria and identity. “This project allowed me to reflect on my own journey while simultaneously building community and practicing vulnerability with those in front of my lens.”

Jacq Justice is a photographer & director based in Los Angeles.
Jacq got her start taking photos in high school when her Dad would get them both passes to local shows, and they would shoot them together. It wasn’t until after college, when a kind friend offered to show her how to shoot film that Jacq made the switch to film photography. “We spent a whole day shooting a few rolls, processing the film, and making prints in his makeshift bathroom darkroom, into the wee hours of the night.”
Jacq believes that trial and error over the years is what made film become second nature to her, and she now prefers film over digital. She says, “film was, at first, very frustrating to me. I got back many blank rolls and it took me a while to figure out where I was going wrong.” From a visual perspective, she notes loving the tones of film and the way “it can capture a moment in time that feels more akin to the emotional experience of that moment than digital”.
It’s the process of shooting film that Jacq loves most. “I love having to be more intentional about my shots, I love having to wait to see them - it allows the work to become a memory and forces you to trust your eye and judgement.”
Jacq primarily works in music, which proves difficult to shoot on film as there tend to be a lot of low light scenarios with fast moving objects. These situations have forced her to accept the imperfections. “A little motion blur, or a soft focus, or underexposure doesn’t bother me. It feels genuine to how I experienced that moment and I find both comfort and magic in that.”
