As a first generation Canadian with Finnish parents & Finnish/Swedish grandparents, Scandinavian style is something thatâs Iâve always gravitated towards. To me its classic!
Although one might think niching down while working in a design field would be catastrophic, itâs been the exact opposite for me. Developing a signature style has helped me grow as a designer & helped my business grow too.
This way Iâve become an expert at Scandinavian style outdoor spaces rather than mediocre at all styles. I get to do what I love, & my clients already gravitate towards this style so itâs a win/win.
Why I love Scandi style outdoor spaces:
đ¤ Clean lines â the look tidy and give the gardens structure and definition. Plus there are the practical parts as materials are used more efficiently and furniture fits better too.
đ¤ A light and tight colour pallet. I just prefer light colours over dark and by keeping the pallet tight, as sense of serene calm is achieved.
đ¤ Natural materials, hopefully local. There is nothing better! The age well and offer cozy textures â the hallmark of a well designed outdoor space.
đ¤ Casual, unfussy gardens including native plants. Biodiversity in a garden wins for both the health of said garden and in the way they make you feel!
đ¤ Saunas over hot tubs - what can I say? đ
đ¤ A deep respect for nature is important to Scandinavian culture and should be considered in every garden and outdoor space. Make your outdoor space a safe haven for wildlife brings a whole other element to an outdoor living space.

I designed this project in 2023, and construction began the following year. Not all projects are constructed this quickly â some clients take years after the design is complete before the finally pull the trigger and secure the necessary contractors! Itâs a large financial commitment and it usually entails giving up your yard for the build for a whole season. But these clients were ready
Though this property is actually quite large, the septic placement, existing mature trees and elevations dictated the footprint of this outdoor living space.
On the Wishlist was:
* a swimming pool w/auto cover
* Waterfalls
* a spa
* Spaces for cooking, dining and lounging
* a pergola for partial shade and swing chairs
* Gardens â flowering and in light colours
* a small pool house
* a mix of materials for warmth and interest ( note the brick look fireplace patio contracted with the large format porcelain pavers and the clear cedar deck with NO screws showing)
* Lots of FIRE đĽ
Now about all these fire features! This client LOVES fire so I knew right from the start she wanted several. The main free-standing fireplace is (amazingly) prefabricated from! I love the look and it can be used for cooking a woodfired pizza too đ
The pretty fire bowls are gas fueled from. Easy breezy on and off for some quick midweek fire ambiance, without the smoke đ¨
Canât wait to see these gardens filled in next year along with some stunning outdoor furniture!

Donât get me wrong, juts because Iâm calling this a âsimpleâ landscape design doesnât mean it was easy. It took lots of time and contemplation to come up with this courtyard garden design.
Landscape and garden design arenât static like architecture and home design. Lots of thought needs to go into the plant aspect as these are living things needing certain requirements to live and thrive đą
Scale is a super important component as well. Note how well this giant fountain fits the scale so well here? A smaller one would NOT have has the same impact.
Also, the tiny succulent garden as the base offers great contrast in both size and texture. Just like in beautiful interior spaces, texture is a key part of a successful outdoor composition and so is pattern (Note the diagonal pattern of the courtyard patio)
Yes, this garden pallet is small, but between the Incrediball Hydrangea, low boxwood hedging, Sugartyme Crabapple, Emerald Cedars, Rozanne Cranesbill and Allium there is year-round interest here! AND these lovely spa owners seeded the unused areas around their property with a native meadow mix that supports the local pollinators and wildlife. Its been about 5 years since seeding and those wildflowers are thriving!

Leaving my last backyard/garden and all its outdoor living amenities was hard, but not nearly as hard as it was to leave all my wild friends behind.
Over the 7 years I lived there I saw MANY generations come and go, has doves nest on my bedroom windowsill and could feed chipmunks, chickadees, and squirrels from my hands.
When we decided to sell/move I cut back my feeding slowly to acclimatize the wildlife â which broke my heart! But I also left a seed feeder, suet feeder and a bag of seed for the new homeowners in hopes they would continue to feed my wild friends. When I finally screwed up the courage to drive by 6 months later, I saw that feeder was still out! But sadly no feed in it đ
Bird feeding pro tip: You must clean you feeders! Its an important step that many people miss. A dirty feeder spreads all kinds of disease. Better to not feed than keep a dirty feeder IMO.

Iâve been questioned a lot about my plant spacing over the years. Doubt creeps in from Homeowners or other professionals involved within the project.
The truth about mostly perennial gardens? They donât look good their first year. But by the second year they look pretty good! Itâs a huge difference, really. This one filled in especially quick as it was planted in early May and the after video was late summer the following year, so this garden was 1.5 years old at the time with two growing seasons under its belt. The client also installed irrigation which makes plant grow in faster too.
I always design gardens planted densely for a few reasons:
1. Plants fill in and protect the soil acting like a âgreen mulchâ over time. You wonât have to keep adding mulch every year in a garden like this.
2. Because the bare soil is protected, less weeds can take hold and thereâs less evaporation of moisture. I always say: When bare soil exists, weeds will come đ
2. Because the plants within the gardens roots nit together in a matrix system its even harder for weed seeds to penetrate over time! Plus, the plant roots along with the mycelium network within the soil allows the plants to share resources with each other. Isnât nature so cool?!
Itâs a myth that densely planted gardens are higher maintenance. Dense planting makes a garden lower maintenance & healthier!

Whenever I show a large perennial based garden here someone inevitably askes â But what does it look like in winter?â My response is always â¨GORGEOUSâ¨
It boggles my mind that some people donât see beauty in seed heads and dry grasses. If these were all cut to the ground in fall all youâd see it a boring blanket of snow.
Sure, its not vibrant like a summer garden, but thereâs so much beauty in the subtle browns and tans. Even the garden great Piet Oudolf chooses perennials specifically for their winter interest. Cut your garden back in Fall and youâll be missing out! đ¤
And more than just for beauty, leaving your garden standing feeds local birds and wildlife, creates shelter and insulation for hibernating pollinators and other insects (like Fireflies) and even insulates/protects the plants roots from cold winter temps. Those standing stocks also collect snow giving your plants some extra moisture. And snow is not bad for your garden; the snow protects and insulates it!
The only exception to this is if you have a plant with diseased leaves. And in that case that plant should be cut back and the disposed of (not in the composter). Yes, certain broadleaf perennials get mushy by springtime but thatâs just a normal part of decomposition and the âmushyâ still feeds soil microbes.
Iâm sorry to tell you, that all those landscape companies out there promoting âFall Garden Cleanupâ are lying. Thereâs no need to clean up your garden in Fall. Save your money, your time, and the planet by keeping your fall garden a little messy â itâs the way nature prefers it!

Of course, the house is unique and gorgeous which is exciting to design around. But what even more important to the success of a design project is synergy between the designer and the client. And lucky for me, has excellent taste

Youâve probably heard the terms âlose the lawnâ or at least âreduce your lawnâ but for some itâs hard to imagine a yard without it.
Though this garden design shown was for a client - personally, Iâve had zero lawn at my last 3 homes. And I didnât miss it! Yes, functional patios/outdoor living spaces & paths are required but when surrounded by large gardens (including lots of native plants) the whole space get used up quickly & esthetically. Not to mention the joy of all the wonderful wildlife & pollinators that quickly find biodiverse, habitat gardens like these đ
For larger spaces, replacing an entire lawn with gardens isnât often realistic or very cost effective and this is where a native meadow can be economically grown from seed. Yes, it requires patience as it doesnât look great for the first couple of years. But if done correctly by the 3rd year it looks lovely & requires zero watering & fertilization. Iâve done this at my current home and this year Iâll be able be able to show it here! And for the pet owners out there, our dogs use our meadow just as the would a lawn though there are some plant casualties along the way haha
The best way to seed a native meadow is via the winter sow-in-place method. This way the seeds get all the cold stratification they require and come up in spring when there ready â no watering required. Its sow easy - please comment or reach out if you have any questions!
Lawns are a big yawn IMO. They donât provide anything for wildlife, they take up precious resources like water & are the highest maintenance plant you can have. Have you replaced or reduced your lawn yet?

Even if youâd had problems with your hydrangeas not blooming, I promise â your hydrangea dreams can come true đ
A lot of beautiful (but fussy) macrophylla hydrangeas as sold at nurseries but just because they look great there doesnât mean theyâll bloom reliably in your garden. If ever someone complains to me that their hydrangeas donât bloom 90% of the time - itâs a macrophylla. Here in zone 5 they might not bloom at all or only for a couple of weeks if that! Macrophylla Hydrangeas are tricky plants that need specific conditions: consistently moist soil, but not wet. Let them dry out once and theyâll stop blooming for the rest of the year đą
Hereâs my reliable Hydrangea list below (all hardy zones 3- 9)
Limelight / Hydrangea paniculata âLimelightâ â A classic Hydrangea with large dramatic flowers in colours ranging from lime green, white& sometimes dusty rose/ burgundy later in the season. Grows 6-8â.
Little Lime Punch / Hydrangea paniculata âLittle Lime Punchâ â grows 3-5â tall with an exceptionally long blooming period! The blooms emerge lime green but mature to a gorgeous display of white, light pink & rich strawberry hues â all at the same time!
Vanilla Strawberry / Hydrangea paniculata âRenhyâ â Flowers open white and gradually turn a strawberry shade resulting in a wonderful colour progression throughout the blooming season.
Incrediball Hydrangea Hydrangea arborescens âAbetwoâ â Grows 4-5â with huge ball shaped blossoms that stay upright and donât flop! The perfect choice for an all-white garden.
TIPS:
Though all the hydrangeas are listed are for part sun/ sun they will bloom better in full sun in northern areas & part shade in warmer climates
Prune hydrangeas in late winter/early spring before they start to leaf out. Otherwise, youâll get only small flowers.
Donât cut them back to the ground. Only prune 1/3 of the shrub per year.

Landscape design covers so much more than gardens, but plants do have a great influence on my design work and style. I firmly believe that backyards without plantings are cold, inhospitable, and unwelcoming spaces. In every home Iâve ever owned Iâve created huge gardens where Iâve tried and tested so many plants. Using my own garden as a test lab gives me great insight into how these plants perform and a lot of insight into the wildlife that lives within our gardens. I truly enjoy passing on my hands-on knowledge of plants & pollinators to my clients.
