A Sleepable Listening Session by Kyoka
Floating — Where Silence Meets Sound
Set within the unique acoustic space of a church, this 35-minute listening session explores the relationship between silence and subtle sound.
Rather than filling the space with sound, the work draws attention to the boundary between sound and stillness, and to shifts in perception. As delicate electronic layers interact with the silence of the church, listening gradually moves from the perception of external sound toward changes in bodily sensation and the sense of time.
For visitors
This listening session takes place in a reclining format. Please wear comfortable clothing for lying down for approximately 35 minutes. Loose, non-restrictive clothing is recommended. A blanket or warm socks may also be helpful.
Yoga mats and pillows are available at the venue, but in limited numbers.

In der besonderen akustischen Architektur einer Kirche entsteht eine etwa 35-minütige Listening Session, die das Verhältnis von Stille und feinen Klangschichten erfahrbar macht.
Die Arbeit richtet die Aufmerksamkeit auf die Grenze zwischen Klang und Stille sowie auf Veränderungen der Wahrnehmung. Durch das Zusammenspiel subtiler elektronischer Klänge mit der Stille des Kirchenraums verschiebt sich das Hören allmählich von äußerem Klang hin zu Veränderungen von Körperempfinden und Zeiterfahrung.
Einschlafen, die Augen geschlossen halten oder wach bleiben – all das ist willkommen.

Diese Listening Session findet im Liegen statt. Bitte kommen Sie in bequemer Kleidung, sodass Sie etwa 35 Minuten entspannt liegen können. Eine Decke oder warme Socken können hilfreich sein.

In exchange with the group’s researchers, she will explore the relation between plants, fungi and pathogens and its relevance for local ecosystems at a time they are under growing pressure from human activity.
Kyoka Matsuzawa is a Japan-born sound artist, composer, and artist-researcher based in Zurich. She is currently studying the MA Composition and Theory, Electroacustic Composition at Zurich University of the Arts. Her work explores the relationship between sound, perception, and environmental change, with a particular interest in disappearing soundscapes and acoustic environments.
Combining spatial audio, installation, and neuroscience-informed approaches, she develops works that connect artistic practice with scientific research, including transforming environmental and biological data into sound.
Her work has been presented internationally at festivals, museums, and research platforms across Europe, Asia, and North America.
The Master Series Residencies are a collaboration between the artists-in-labs program and the Master Transdisciplinary Studies of Zurich University of the Arts.
