Ein wichtiger Aspekt seines Erfolgsrezepts war sicherlich, dass er konsequent an sich und seiner Kunst arbeitete und dabei immer dem Neuen aufgeschlossen blieb. Sein künstlerisches Portfolio hätte daher auch leicht für zwei Künstlerleben gereicht. Am Anfang seiner Karriere stand die Malerei mit Öl und Acryl, später arbeitete er außerdem als Fotograf, Bühnenbildner und experimentierte mit Computergrafiken. Zuletzt entdeckte er das iPad als künstlerisches Ausdrucksmittel für sich.
Auch in der Bildsprache blieb Hockney immer variabel und progressiv. In seiner gegenständlichen Malerei besaß er die Fähigkeit, Bildelemente zu reduzieren, ohne dass die Szene ihre Botschaft und ihre Atmosphäre einbüßte. Dies brachte ihm das Label "Pop Art" ein, mit dem er sich aber niemals identifizieren wollte. Vielmehr lotete er alle Bildsprachen vom Naturalismus bis an den Rand der Abstraktion für sich aus.
Rund 70 Jahre lang hatte David Hockney der Kunstgeschichte seinen Stempel aufgedrückt. Seine Flexibilität und Kreativität verschafften ihm Präsenzen in allen renommierten Kunsthäusern der Welt, außerdem war er zweimal auf der documenta eingeladen und übernahm verschiedene Lehraufträge.
Seine Popularität spiegelte sich auch in Auktionserlösen wider: 2018 wurde sein Gemälde "Portrait of an Artist" bei Christie’s für 90 Millionen Dollar verkauft.

Vor rund zehn Jahren traf Anne Böddeker eine Entscheidung, die ihre künstlerische Arbeit grundlegend veränderte: Die Malerei sollte nicht länger nebenbei stattfinden, sondern ins Zentrum ihres Lebens rücken. Zu lange hatte die Zeit gefehlt, zu oft war sie zwischen anderen Projekten aufgeteilt. Der Entschluss war klar: Ganz oder gar nicht.
Mit ihrem Atelierhaus schuf sich die Künstlerin einen Rückzugsort fernab des Alltags. „In the middle of nowhere“ fand sie die Ruhe, den Raum und die Konzentration, die es braucht, um sich ganz auf die Malerei einzulassen.
Während der Corona-Zeit entstand hier eine Werkreihe, die heute zentral für ihr Schaffen ist. Aus einem gedeckten Tisch, sorgfältig ausgewählten Lebensmitteln und inszenierten Arrangements entwickelten sich ihre Stillleben. Fotografiert, analysiert und malerisch weitergedacht, wuchsen sie von einzelnen Motiven zu vielschichtigen Bildwelten.
Der Weg dorthin war von Umwegen begleitet. Doch erst mit der klaren Entscheidung für die eigene Malerei entstand die künstlerische Konsequenz, die ihre Arbeiten heute prägt. Rückblickend ist dieser Schritt für Anne Böddeker eindeutig: die beste Entscheidung ihres Lebens.

Thoelke verbindet in seinen Arbeiten architektonische Motive der futuristisch geprägten DDR-Moderne mit naturalistischen Elementen wie Birken- oder Essigbäumen. Beide gelten als Pionierpflanzen, die sich durch ihre Widerstandsfähigkeit und Anspruchslosigkeit auszeichnen. In der Gegenüberstellung von standardisierter Architektur und widerständiger Vegetation entstehen Bildräume, in denen sich Struktur und Wachstum, Planung und Aneignung überlagern.
