Most farmed fish don’t grow on a natural marine diet. Their fat profile shifts depending on the feed they’re given, often meaning a very different balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids compared to wild fish. And when you stop eating the whole fish, you also lose a lot of the micronutrient density nature built into smaller species.
Because here’s the part almost nobody talks about:
Millions of tonnes of small wild fish - sardines, anchovies, and other nutrient-rich species - are used to feed farmed salmon. These are the same fish that could have been direct, affordable nutrition for communities in coastal and low-income regions, especially for children who rely on fish for essential nutrients like iodine, selenium, iron, vitamin A, and zinc.
Instead, they are processed into feed for a luxury export product.
At the same time, open-net salmon farming brings real ecological pressure:
• nutrient waste and «sludge» that alters seabed ecosystems
• disease and parasite pressure on wild fish populations
• escapees that interbreed with wild salmon and can dilute local genetic adaptations over time
So the question isn’t just «is farmed salmon food?»
It’s: food for whom, at what ecological cost, and taken from where?
From a One Health perspective - human health, animal health, and ecosystem health are inseparable. You can’t optimize one while degrading the other two!
Maybe it’s about time we had a more honest conversation about what ends up on our plates..

Think about it: children are growing faster than at any other stage of life. Their brains, immune systems, bones, muscles, and organs are developing every single day. If anyone needs nutrient-dense food, it’s children!
Yet the typical kids’ menu is often built around the cheapest and most heavily processed ingredients in the restaurant: nuggets, fries, hot dogs, refined buns, sugary drinks, and desserts..
These foods are usually low in many of the nutrients children need most and high in refined carbs, unhealthy fats, and additives. Over time, a diet built around UP- foods can negatively affect gut health and reduce the diversity of beneficial bacteria in the microbiome.
What’s even more concerning is that our gut microbes influence our food preferences. The more UP- food we eat, the more our bodies can start craving those same foods, creating a cycle that becomes increasingly difficult to break.
Children deserve real food. Fish. Seafood. Meat. Eggs. Vegetables. Fruit. Potatoes. Foods that nourish growth and help develop a broad palate from an early age.
Why do we assume adults deserve the best food on the menu while children get the cheapest?
Kids deserve real food too!

By far the most hectic month yet! So much has happened in such a short space of time, so many fun moments, and it’s all felt like one big, crazy whirlwind 🙏🏼✨☀️
We spend so much time blaming kids for wanting processed snacks, but we’re the ones introducing them in the first place.
Children learn what «normal food» is from us.
Make real, homemade food the standard, and watch their taste buds adapt.
and as a biologist and a mom, I can’t help wondering: have we really reached a point where we need research to tell us that a one-year-old’s deepest need is closeness, attachment, safety, and connection with their primary caregiver? 🤯
I’ve even heard a doctor argue that it’s better for a child to be in daycare than at home in a 3 rooms apartment with their parent.. 😳
Maybe I’m old-fashioned, but I don’t believe money, square footage, or career opportunities are more important than being present during the few short years our children are little.
I’ve been a single mom. I’ve worked late nights. I’ve sacrificed income and opportunities. Not because it was easy, but because I knew these years would never come back.
The question isn’t whether children can adapt to daycare - it is why we’ve built a society that expects one-year-olds to adapt to being separated from their parents in the first place.
What happened to common sense??
I’ve been hands-on with Leon since day one.
No village, no babysitters, very little help - just us, learning life together.
He spent his early years by my side instead of in front of screens.
We talked, cooked, read, explored, and did everyday life together.
And now I see it paying off in the way he learns, thinks, creates, and grows with confidence 🙏🏼
I’m only sharing this to inspire, share what worked so beautifully for us, and remind people that presence truly matters.🤍

For me, it’s simple: small children thrive on real, nutritious food. Staying away from fried foods, artificial colors, and too much refined sugar helps their growth, brain development, and long-term health. Let’s instead share knowledge, raise awareness, and work together to give our children the best possible start in life!🙏🏼❤️

Dalen Hotel is renowned for its strict etiquette, offering an atmosphere of refined elegance. The ambiance is tranquil with few young children present. Leon has been a delightful exception though. From before his second birthday, Leon has dined in the hotel’s esteemed restaurants, wearing his crisp white shirt and adeptly using knife and fork.. 🥹❤️🇳🇴
