We introduce a new colour series by one of our most popular artists Nankei pottery.

They have produced a majority of their teapots, yunomi tea cups, chawan and more in a stylish gloss glaze. It is a light gray with subtle hints of blue and compliments their modern aesthetic.

On the 30th of June each year many Shinto Shrines hold a Summer Purification Ritual called Nagoshi no Harae.

People walk through a large wreath made of bladed grass to symbolise atonement for sins in the first half of the year, and to pray for health for the remainder of the year.

They first pass through the left, then right, then left again, forming the symbol of infinity ∞. A similar ritual is held on new year’s eve.

Part of the ritual also involves worshippers writing their name and age on a hitogata (small paper dolls made of paper). They rub them or blow on them symbolising the passing of impurities or sins onto them. These paper dolls are collected and also passed through the woven grass ring, often in a box, and then they are floated down a river before being burnt in a fire.

Introducing new artist DeiDei to our store

A family business with both father and son being ceramic artists, they produce beautiful and organic Mino-yaki style pottery.

Utilising a traditional wood fired kiln, they create a number of traditional glazes including Shino, Oribe and Kiseto. Each item is unique and has its own character.

We offer a small collection of Yunomi tea cups in various glazes, and hope to add more products in future.

Some people might have heard the shocking news that the iconic weeping cherry blossom, or ‘Shidare-zakura’ located in the famous Sannenzaka street fell over a couple of days ago.

Sadly it fell on a 62 year old man who suffered minor injuries, but survived to tell the tale. It's a miracle more people weren't effected, as it's one of the busiest tourist spots in Kyoto, and the steps are usually packed with people.

The famous street winds down from Kiyomizu Temple, and the cherry blossom was an iconic landmark. An especially stunning sight when in full bloom, or blanketed in Winter snow. Sad to hear 😢

Spring is on our doorstep now as the beautiful ‘Ume’ or Plum Blossoms are in full bloom across Kyoto.

These ‘Shidare’ or weeping plums are a famous feature of Jonangu Shrine in the South of Kyoto.

Many people flock each late February/March to wander the meandering path through the gorgeous garden and take in the beauty of the delicate pink and white blossoms.

Setsubun is an annual festival held across Japan each year, typically February 3rd.

Meaning "seasonal division" it is held the day before what is considered the traditional start to Spring.

The Festival highlight is a ritual where a member of the family dresses up as a demon or ogre signifying evil or bad fortune and enters the house. The remaining family members (particularly children) throw hard beans (fukuyama) at the ogre to drive him back out of the house, symbolising the driving out of bad spirits in order to allow good fortune in.

It's also practiced at schools with younger children, and at many Shinto Shrines throughout Japan. One of the bigger festivals being the one pictured at Kyoto's Heian-jingu Shrine.

Setsubun has a long tradition in Japan, and is some good fun with the family while having interesting symbolism.

Higashiyama is the renowned historic area to the Eastern side of Kyoto. It features many picturesque streets and some of Kyoto's most famous landmarks, including Yasaka-no-to, a beautiful 5 story pagoda.

Even more beautiful when blanketed in snow, this is a rare sight as Kyoto might only get heavy snow every few years.
