my hands,

What place is this,
and what has become of me here?”

• “The Leftovers”

“The Leftovers” unfolds as a three-part meditation on mourning, a visual narration of grief experienced by those who remain.

Produced during and in the aftermath of the events of 2025–2026 in Iran, the series moves through states of shock, suspension, denial, memory, and quiet transformation.

The first chapter inhabits disbelief: fragmented figures, collapsed bodies, waiting, silence, and the psychological stillness of uncertainty.

The second chapter approaches mourning after confrontation with catastrophe. Colours gradually shift toward earth tones, soil becoming both witness and acceptance.

The final chapter turns toward memory through images and recurring crows, silent observers carrying traces of historical remembrance.

Q (François Busnel): What distinguishes the real world from the fictional worlds of novels?

Umberto Eco:
Those who read novels know that fictional worlds
are no less structured than reality.

We all understand what a story is
we begin by telling them to children.

Narrative is the unfolding of events.
And those who write
arrive, at a certain moment,
at a deeper truth.

Q: What defines the principles of Iranian architecture?

Answer:
Iranian art and architecture possess deep historical roots, which are clearly reflected in a wide range of artistic works. These principles are shared across Iranian society and are expressed through key characteristics such as people-oriented design, self-sufficiency, and inward orientation.

Q: From your arrival—how would you describe the College of Decorative Arts in Tehran?

Michel Bruneau:
I had just graduated from the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.
An Iranian classmate, whose name I no longer remember, once asked me:
“Would you like to work in Tehran?”

It was 1963.
I didn’t really know where Iran was, only that it lay somewhere in the Middle East.
I didn’t answer immediately.
I needed time to think…
and to speak with my wife.

“NOWRUZ – IMAGES, SOUNDS AND VOICES FROM CONTEMPORARY IRAN”

March 20 – November 22, 2026
Opening: March 20, 6pm
Bea Vita, Fondamenta delle Capuzine 3082, Venezia

Nowruz was born from the encounter between Yasra Pouyeshman and Mara Sartore and takes shape as an open, evolving organism, conceived as the first chapter in a series of encounters dedicated to images, sounds, and voices from contemporary Iran. At a time when political and social conditions make the circulation of artworks and dialogue with Iran increasingly difficult, the project embraces this condition of suspension and partiality, transforming it into an open narrative structure in which absence becomes presence.

Nowruz brings together a selection of works from KOOCH’s Venetian warehouse and introduces the work of Reihane Raei, Siroo, Afsoongar, Mahboobeh Yazdan, Ehsan Shayegh, Elahe Abdi, and Aynaz – artists who, through diverse practices, explore themes of memory, identity, and transformation. The project’s visual identity and exhibition poster are designed by Babak Safari. The exhibition is conceived as a gesture of closeness and friendship towards the Iranian people, with the hope that the “new day” evoked by Nowruz may soon coincide with a time of freedom and peace.
