Before heading into Bulgaria’s mountains, we spent time exploring the capital and quickly realized that Sofia is so much more than just a gateway to the rest of the country.
From the iconic Lions’ Bridge and the ancient ruins of Serdica hidden beneath the modern city, to the beautiful Saint Nedelya Cathedral and the charming Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, every corner seemed to tell a different story.
What we loved most wasn’t just the landmarks—it was the atmosphere. Wandering through local streets, discovering the antique and artisan market, watching daily life unfold and finding beauty in the small moments that don’t always make it into travel guides.
Sofia surprised us. It’s a city where Roman history, Orthodox architecture, local culture and modern life exist side by side, making it one of the most underrated city breaks in Europe.

adventure sports, hiking, and receives loads of sunlight all year round.
It’s popular amongst kite surfers 🏄 and hikers, but most people don’t know this place exists!
