Kohei Arano's solo exhibition "as it is" will be held at ART GALLERY 2 on the 10th floor of Daimaru Tokyo Store from May 20th (Wed) to June 2nd (Tue), 2026.
Kohei Arano has been continuing to create art while moving between the fields of Japanese painting and street art.
Japanese painting, which incorporates the aging of gold leaf and the changing seasons of nature; while street art, which accepts being overwritten and weathered in the city. The "sense of accepting change" that underlies both has consistently flowed through his works to date.
In this exhibition, "as it is," comes after different accumulations, fragments of memories and landscapes suddenly arise in everyday life are purely expressed in their original state.
The motifs such as wisteria swaying, clouds and moon floating in the sky, do not converge on a specific meaning, but quietly connect with viewers. It is a moment when the passage of time inherent in Japanese painting, which has embraced change, and the ever-evolving sensibility of the street, constantly being renewed amidst change, emerge as a single image.

An ordinary morning, the Tokyo sky, the time we wait for traffic lights…
The scenery of everyday life changes with four seasons.
Art creation always exists in my days. I reconstruct the elements using colors and forms found in those daily moments.
In those existing in our daily life:
The sky on that day
The night with cinematic sense
The clear morning with glowing sun
Different colors and forms certainly exist there.
Mineral pigments, Washi, Gofun… These Japanese painting materials are grabbed on my hands every day.
Gold leaves capture and reflect the light of our days.
The colors of life reflected in the gold leaves change with morning, afternoon, night, and seasons, walking alongside the moments.
I hope this exhibition gently accompanies you as such a daily moment.

日本画家・新埜康平は、伝統技法とストリートカルチャーを融合させた作品で注目を集めています。
かつてスケートボードのためにカリフォルニアを訪れ、外から日本を見つめたとき、日本文化の魅力を改めて捉えたと言う作家。グラフィティで用いられるボトルペンに膠や墨を組み合わせ、さらに経年とともに表情を変える銀箔など、日本画材ならではの自然物を用いながら、伝統の延長線上に、私たちが生きる”今”をつなげています。
本展では、自身の原点であるストリートの感性と東洋美術の根幹にある「余白」の思想を深化させた新作を発表。天井高5mの空間を活かした大型作品に加え、木枠を積み上げた記憶の箱や、旧式テレビによる映像表現なども展開されます。
平面と立体のあいだを往復するような仕掛けを通して、視覚にとどまらないあらゆる感覚を刺激し、想像力を巡らせる「余白」を鑑賞者に提示します。

いつもの朝、東京の空、信号待ちの時間
日常の景色は四季と共に移ろい変わります。
制作はいつも生活の中にあり、その中から見つけた色や形を使いイメージを再構築しています。
生活の中に存在する、
あの日の空
映画のような夜
透明な朝陽
様々な色や形は確かにそこに存在しています。
日本画材で使われる岩絵の具や、和紙、胡粉はそんな日常の生活の中で手に入れることがてきる素材です。
また箔は日々の生活の光を取り込み、反射します。箔に写り込む生活の色は朝昼晩や四季の中で変化し、同じ時を歩んでくれます。
そんな生活の中でそっと寄り添ってくれるような展示になればと思います。

Arano Kohei has been focusing on the "culture of embracing change" that is common to both Japanese painting and street art. Foil leaves change colours over time. City walls change appearance due to wind and rain and the overwriting of other people's work. This exhibition, "day after day," offers a panoramic view of the artist's journey, which has embraced such transitions and layers of change. Tradition and City, stillness and impulse, past and present intertwine, and the works are reborn every day. This is an attempt to present his conviction that the continuous change creates the future.

Artist Kohei Arano: The Moving White Space, the Intersection of Japanese Painting and Street Art
Kohei Arano grew up surrounded by street culture, immersed in skateboarding and graffiti. This free and improvisational culture eventually led him to the seemingly polar opposite of “Japanese painting”. While this approach itself is unique, his paintings also harbor a deeper, more profound spirit rooted in the essence of Japanese painting.
He says, “Each color is a once-in-a-lifetime encounter.” Pigments dissolved in water and glue are affected by humidity and temperature, making the final form unclear at the moment of painting. After drying, transformation begins, and the expression emerges. It is precisely the attitude of “receptivity,” filled with awe and trust to nature. No matter how advanced one’s technique, one cannot resist the mysterious power of water. This is why artist entrusts the art materials, nature, and “time.” Embracing improvisation, leaving ambiguity and white space— this is where the Japanese aesthetic resides.

【インタビュー】アーティスト・新埜康平：動き出す余白、日本画とストリートの交差点
ストリートカルチャーを原体験とし、スケートボードやグラフィティに親しみながら育った新埜康平。自由で即興的なカルチャーが、やがて彼を「日本画」という一見対極にある表現へと導いた。この流れ自体がユニークだが、彼の絵にはそれ以上に深く、日本画の本質に根差した精神が潜んでいる。
「一色一色が一期一会」と語る。水と膠に溶かれた顔料は、湿度や温度にも左右され、描いたその瞬間には完成形が分からない。乾き、変化して初めて、その表情をあらわにする。それはまさに、自然への畏怖と信頼に満ちた「受容」の態度だ。どれほど技術が進んでも、水という神秘の力に抗えない。だからこそ、描き手は画材に、自然に、そして “時間” に委ねることになる。即興性を受け入れ、曖昧なまま、余白を残す——そこにこそ、日本的な美意識が宿る。
