The program grew out of the Office Associateship Program, with the goal of providing expanded professional experience at nationally recognized design firms for exceptional graduate students in their final year in addition to the financial support previously provided by the program.

Buildings live many predicted and unpredicted lives as time progresses. This building, located in Ashtabula, experiences a narrative future that progresses 50 years, starting as an abandoned theater, experiencing devastation, regrowth, and soon becoming a community oriented space. The design focused on implementing simple yet impactful architectural interventions in thresholds, circulation, and program. The fortified shell of the original theater keeps remnants of the drama that once existed, while the new interior pushes this feeling further through compositional moves.

The “First, Color.” studio is dedicated to choosing a color and designing in a way that brings color to the forefront of architecture. By working closely with the company True Pigments, we learned about the rich legacy of iron oxide at the site in Athens, Ohio. The presence of iron oxide is abundant in the area, from the orange-stained river to the iconic red barns and local brick bridges. From there, we initially chose to study red because of the mineral’s color. Iron oxide, however, does not produce a single fixed color but instead contains a spectrum. The percentage of iron oxide minerals used in production, along with the temperature at which it is fired, can vary the resulting pigment, creating a new palette that we used to inject architecture with instability. Beginning with simple forms, the design foregrounds color, creating a unique experience that disrupts the legibility of the architecture and undermines the form. Based on one’s position, the building reads very differently. From one view, colors across the building align, distorting perspective. From another, the alignment breaks, and the reading becomes disjointed. Color is intentionally unpredictable, challenging traditional perceptions of architecture and blurring the boundaries between program and form.
The article examines the construction and early operations of the Johns Hopkins Hospital to show how architectural documentation practices shaped the emergence of modern medical record-keeping. The essay traces how construction logs, labor accounting, and environmental measurements became foundational to clinical observation, revealing the hospital as an early site where architecture, medicine, and data systems converged into a shared epistemic framework.
---
On a warm summer afternoon in Baltimore, July 15, 1879, as carpenters covered cellar windows and bricklayers raised scaffolding around the emerging walls of the Johns Hopkins Hospital, John K. Bruff, a bricklayer foreman, fell thirty feet from a ladder, fracturing his right leg below the knee.
[…]
Two days later, when it became clear that Bruff required extended care, construction workers arranged a temporary suite in the basement of the partially completed Male Pay Ward.
On that day—nearly a decade before the institution officially opened its doors—Bruff became the first patient admitted to the Johns Hopkins Hospital. The detailed account of Bruff’s accident and treatment appeared not in a medical case report but in the hospital’s construction diary. These entries did not arise from the clinical observations of a physician or nurse but from the meticulous hand of William H. Brady, the construction watchman, who recorded the patient’s recovery with startling precision.
