The past 2 days, Katie has been even more awake and more alert than we’ve seen her. My interactions with her feel different now - she looks deep into my eyes, and is moving her head and eyes more purposefully. I can tell she’s frustrated, but I reassure her she’s been so strong and that there’s a major plan at work in her life. As I do every day, I share her miracle story with her. Last night, was my favorite telling so far - getting to share with her the way she’s impacted so many lives already, and the stage she’ll have for her testimony after this as she proclaims God’s goodness. Mine and Katie’s posture towards hardships like these has always been to give God glory and seek Him even more - not run away. It would be easy for me, and certainly Katie, to be mad at God, but we are rooted in the words of Jesus, “…In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” - John 16:33 NIV. These “troubles” are tests of our faith and should allow us to wrestle with questions surrounding our relationship with God and why we desperately need Jesus.
Through CT scans and monitoring the fluid output from the drain in Katie’s head, doctors have decided it’s best to reattach the bone tomorrow afternoon. They feel this will allow her brain to equalize the pressure and manage fluid better on its own. With the bone back on and due to Katie’s age, doctors feel that physical therapists can be more aggressive with a plan to regain all motor function. Our specific prayer requests are a successful surgery tomorrow, no new blood clots once recovering from surgery, then full restoration on movement on Katie’s right side.

Katie is getting better every day - having more time awake and performing more tasks on command! Once her brain has healed from the bleed that caused the surgery, her body will begin healing and more functions will come back to her. We’re not entirely ”out of the woods” yet, but remain resting in Gods plan for all of this. There are definitely difficult and bad days, but it’s just 1 more bad day we’ve trusted, learned, and fought through. Getting to sit next to Katie all day, every day throughout this, I can’t help but thank God for the miracles he’s performed - removing the fistula from her brain and rerouting an artery that could have caused blindness. However, I’ve only just realized 2 other types of “miracles” that I was overlooking: everyday miracles and unnoticed miracles. The everyday miracle of having surgeons that are able to open our bodies to diagnose and fix problems that allow full restoration and healing - often something we overlook and is certainly a miracle. The way we are wired and able to function and interact with each other - learning how complex our brains and bodies are over the past few weeks has given me a greater appreciation for God’s designs. Then, the unnoticed miracles - the ones that could be happening behind the scenes but we never get to know about them. Before, during and after Katie’s surgery we were praying for miracles - but I didn’t realize God could have already performed a “miracle” that we just didn’t witness. He could have prevented the brain bleed from continuing, he could have saved more brain damage from happening, he could have very well saved Katie’s life and kept her here. There’s no telling the amount of miracles that were performed on Katie! And that’s what I’ve realized - we’re often asking and praying for big, crazy miracles when we don’t sit back and thank God for the ones he may have done, but we don’t get to see. I feel that we can only realize those things when our eyes are fully fixed on Him.

Over the course of the past few days, my favorite part of spending all day with Katie is telling her the story of how Jesus healed her. Each day I can look into her eyes and see her starting to fully understand the story - all with a little smile on her face. I tell her that when she sees me crying it’s not because I’m sad or worried, but it’s because I’m thankful and proud. The doctors and nurses say she may or may not remember what we’ve been telling her, but they are encouraged by her tests and neurological tests. Throughout the day we see Katie and her personality shine through in her little motions or hand squeezes. As of yesterday, 3 of the 4 ventricles in her brain have fully drained of unnecessary fluid. The only thing remaining is a small clot from the most recent brain bleed that couldn’t be removed due to its location. Over time, Katie’s body will break down and absorb the clot in her 3rd ventricle. Her lungs and neurological function are improving well enough that she was taken off the ventilator on Wednesday! Overall, Katie is progressing well and we are still praying for full restoration of her body and mind. We believe Jesus has healed her already and will continue to do so! I’m so proud of who she is and thankful for a wife dedicated to serving the lord and others! I love you, Kate - keep pushing through!
Davie girl, we love you so much. Your mom and I are so blessed to have you! This isn’t the way we envisioned your first month of life, but I’m certain it will serve as an inspiration for the rest of your life. Your mom is a warrior - even pumping milk for you during this cause she knows it’s best for you. As I sit here in the hospital with your mom, I’m telling her how good you’ve been and how you’re eating and growing! I can feel your mom’s peace knowing you’re healthy and taken care of - she can’t wait to be back cuddling you! We’re still praying for you every single day -that you to would know Jesus personally and be known by the peace and comfort He provides.

Over the past two days, Katie has begun assisted physical therapy in her hospital bed — rebuilding core strength and slowly getting reacclimated to her body as she wakes up from sedation. Today, even with some sedation still in her system, she was able to complete tasks for the nurses and recognize objects, which is a big improvement from Monday. Katie has become much more responsive in conversations with us and the nurses. She’s able to move her left arm and leg when needed, and when asked questions, she responds with hand squeezes. Every single time, I feel like I know exactly what she’s trying to say based on the squeeze she gives. Since the brain surgery, Katie hasn’t been able to open her eyes due to the swelling near the front of her face. This afternoon, after some of the sedation wore off, she began blinking and trying to open her eyes on her own. After some time, we helped her open them, and she was able to look at our faces for the first time since before all of this happened. We’re continuing to work on removing the sedation while carefully balancing Katie’s pain and making sure she can keep breathing on her own without the ventilator. As of now, Katie has been breathing independently for over 48 hours with little to no assistance. I’ve been telling Katie the full story of this hospital stay every single day - and it wasn’t until last night that I truly felt she understood what I was saying. I told her about the miracle God performed — the fistula was no longer there and the surgeons were able to completely remove the hematoma — all we need from her is to fight through recovery. As I told her everything, she rubbed my hand the entire time. It honestly felt like she was comforting me, as if she was saying she can’t wait to tell her story.
On April 30th, Katie underwent brain surgery to help relieve building pressure in her skull from an unknown brain bleed, and to remove the AVF on the top of her head. The AVF is an artery that fed directly into a vein, without capillaries - however, Katie’s AVF had 2 arteries connected to it. The larger artery was embolized during our first stay in the hospital at the beginning of April, and the other wasn’t touched due to it supplying blood to her right eye - Operating on it could have compromised her eyesight. During the brain surgery, upon removing a portion of her skull, the surgeon realized THE AVF WAS NO LONGER THERE! AND ON TOP OF THAT, THE ARTERY THAT WAS FEEDING HER RIGHT EYE HAD NOW FORMED A NEW PATH AND CONNECTION, FULLY REMOVING ITSELF FROM THE VEIN! In the words of our surgeon, “I can’t explain it, it very well could be a miracle. I just can’t give an answer as to why.” Praise God, our healer and miracle worker. The hematoma was removed during the surgery and allowed Katie’s brain to relax and begin healing. Today, CT scans are showing the areas of blood in her head are regressing and her ventricles are draining quicker than usual - again, “can’t explain it, but could be a miracle.” Katie is still lightly sedated, but over the course of the past two days has been breathing on her own for longer stretches of time. Please continue to pray for gross and fine motor function to keep coming back as she wakes up! Things are moving in the right direction, and although we don’t know exactly why Katie’s been put in this position, she has been and will use it to glorify God. Thank you, Jesus! Thank you for your prayers and support of my sweet girl - we appreciate you all so much!
Yesterday, Katie had a head angiogram to help diagnose and treat a new brain bleed that was found. She had this procedure done during her previous stay in the hospital a few weeks ago where they found an AVF on the top of her head. The findings from this new angiogram showed that the AVF was most shut off from the angiogram embolization and no longer has blood flow to it. However, it might have closed off too quickly, not giving her body time to redirect blood flow. Because of the rapid change, it caused a back-flow of blood and caused the new brain bleed. Once the procedure was completed, the neurosurgeon briefed us that they want to remove the AVF altogether and the blood that had gathered in Katie’s head. He told us it required removing a portion of her skull so they can directly see what is going on in Katie’s brain and relieve the pressure that had built up from the bleed. This surgeon has been with us from the very beginning of this process and we were trusting that God was using Him for Katie’s healing. We quickly prayed with the surgeon, who confidently agreed that God would be moving his hands throughout the surgery, and they took Katie straight to the operating room. Over the course of the next 5-6 hours, I wasn’t anxious, nervous, or thinking “what if?”. I was filled with peace from the Lord. Jesus was holding me up and sustaining me. As friends and family waited with me in the waiting room, we got to pray, worship, read scripture, and share stories - Katie would have loved to be in that room. Near the end of the procedure, we had an awesome community gather outside the hospital to physically join us in prayer. Thanking God for who He is and asking for healing and comfort in Jesus name. I then got to see my beautiful girl. She was even more beautiful than the day I met her. Knowing how tough and strong she’s been over the past month of c-section, procedures, and brain surgery. I could smile while holding her hand knowing God was moving yesterday and IS still moving today. The same spirit that raised Jesus from the grave, is living and active in us today. Please continue to pray for full restoration of Katie’s body and mind!

She has been rushed again to the hospital and is now in critical condition— she began having numbness in her hand and one thing led to the other. There is now another brain bleed this time bigger and worse. They just took her away to drill a hole in her head to relieve the fluids / pressure. If this does not work, they will open up her skull. The doctor was very blunt and said she will die if the fluid keeps pooling / does not stop. But even in that, we fear nothing other than God. We will not fear the future and we cling to You God our Rock. We need a miracle and i believe in the power of prayer. I believe that God is merciful and that when we lift up our cries, He does not turn a deaf ear.
Katie, you have been so strong and i know you will make it through. We serve a mighty God and He is your strength in this very moment in time. You have sat day after day, spending your hours with the Lord long before this. You’ve drawn from the well and what is well watered will not be consumed by the fire. God i praise you for what you will do— Jesus please help your daughter, my sister, Kaitlyn Jean
