In this work, we traced the evolution of the far lateral approach from the early clinical questions before its formal definition, through the contributions of Krause, Dandy, Kempe, Drake, and Heros, to the first use of the term “far lateral approach” by Dr. Robert Spetzler at Barrow Neurological Institute in 1990.
