MONA Announces ‘OnlyFerns’: A New Artwork Exploring Alternative Economic Models for Forestry in Tasmania —
The Forest Congress, an initiative of MONA’s first lady Kirsha Kaechele, today announces OnlyFerns, a new artwork exploring alternative economic models for forestry.
Developed in collaboration with artists, forestry workers and conservationists, OnlyFerns proposes a subscription-based platform where ancient forests are funded through adult content.
‘Many conservationists speak on the importance of transition, but they are yet to put forward a viable economic model,’ states Kaechele, ‘Sex sells. It always has. So we’re applying that model to the forest.’
Earnings generated through the artwork will be redirected to employ forest workers.
Tasmania’s state logging company (STT), has requested that explicit content be filmed off-site. In response, Tasmanian sawmill operators Neville Smith Forest Products and Britton Timbers have offered their mills as filming locations of adult content.
In keeping with the lineage of MONA’s Ladies Lounge, OnlyFerns is positioned as a feminist artwork—demonstrating the capacity of women to reimagine systems, positioning them as patrons within an historically male-led industry, and applying feminine energy as a tool resolving entrenched conflict.
‘The male-dominated imagination has led to prolonged conflict,’ the project notes. ‘OnlyFerns asks what alternative futures might look like when women design systems.’
‘God knows some sensuality can’t hurt,’ says forest industry wife Sylvia Elphinstone. ‘Especially in this world that’s going to hell in a hand basket by tightly wired dudes.’
The project is designed to bring opposing groups together. Participants will be ‘bound’ using shibari-inspired restraint practices, with Bob Brown Foundation (BBF) forest protesters showing off their rope skills to tie participants to old growth trees.
‘It’s a new paradigm’, Kaechele concludes,
‘It’s worth believing in—it all comes down to what you believe.’

I felt better. I hate my work too, sometimes. I imagined piling up the tiny heads from my forest psychodrama and burning them on the Parliament lawns. (I ordered the wrong size; they arrived too small.) I imagined dancing on the embers screaming ‘Down with bad art!’
But the art’s so bad I can’t do that. They’re made of petrochemicals. I printed them on fucking plastic! And the middle finger is foam core 😝
Shitting on them won’t help. They will never break down. No bacteria can solve the problem. And shredding will only multiply it. I’m stuck with my art.
Back to Christmas. Christmas wishes do come true ✨So let’s send a few more into the ether:
World peace. I want Muslims and Jews to love each other, or at least coexist. I’m with John and Yoko on this.
And another:
✨I want that parking lot on Montpelier in Salamanca to become a verdant paradise. Towering eucalypts. Aesthetic arrangement of native plants. A few weird succulents. Mr. Sultan, you can help with that! (Don’t worry, you can sneak a development in there too: a wine bar, a day spa—saunas and ice baths—a hotel, art spaces, some apartments.) Just nature woven in and out and through. We’ll live there if you do. David will buy an apartment as penance. When he recovers from this.
Concrete in, concrete out...
The Dharma.
The new wing balances Mona. I’m proud of my husband because he saw it through. He took the thing we saw in Barjac—that destroyed us and made us new—and put it here, at the end of a new tunnel.
A gift of some weight. I hope it makes you cry too.
What is this art? Kiefer’s art is standing in history’s wreckage and not tidying it up. Inheriting a culture that committed atrocity. Watching the promise of transcendence slide into nationalism. Then into violence.
It is:
Too big
Too heavy
Too much
His art physically struggles to exist, mirroring the weight it carries.
Plus cosmic time + scale.
Thank you to all who made it possible ❤️✨🔪💰💸🤑☠️
And my husband waved his magic wand and… ✨
La Ribaute, Anselm Kiefer.
David has been building this thing for years. It’s a monstrosity.
At the Venice Biennale in 2022, I leaned in and whispered in his ear—every artwork was by a female / Indigenous / trans artist, bringing back nature, as well they should—
‘We must be the only museum in the world dedicating a wing to an old white male.’ (Anselm is 80, but you wouldn’t know it. He bounces around like a satyr.)
Build, build, build…
My husband is always radical.
In 2023 we toured the Material Institute leadership through the construction site. They looked… concerned.
‘We must be the only people in the world building with concrete right now,’ I said, ‘you know, as opposed to mycelium / recycled rubbish / bamboo.’
They nodded.
In 2025 I patted David on the back. He needed it. This has been a big stress. (Read his blog.)
Now it’s finished. It’s magnificent. And I’m proud of him—and of that inappropriate old white male who made me cry. Who made me weep. My head hit the ground in one clean swoop.
Barjac, 2007.
I collapsed to the ground, overwhelmed by what I was seeing. A singular vision, so complete, held with such devotion. The discipline of a monk. Day in, day out—exhaling his dream into being. Mindless execution. Being, doing, breathing his art.
And Armagnac in between. A large pour at lunchtime.
‘I have quit drinking,’ the ‘old’ man announced at our opening last week, beer in hand. (He meant Armagnac.) Then he tossed me in the air and bounded around the room like a sprite, like The Fool from the Tarot deck.
‘Do you feel tired after making art,” I asked, “or energised?’
‘Oh! Energised!!!’ he declared.
I felt deflated. I’d just finished a phase of a long project and was wrecked.
‘But I get angry!’ he added.
‘Angry?’
‘Yes. Because I don’t like my work. I get angry when it’s bad.’
I looked at him, surprised.
‘So I rip it up. I piss on it. And I shit on it!’
‘Oh! You shit on it?’
‘Not really,’ he laughed. ‘People are working in there.’
‘That’s very considerate of you.’
Oops, outta room, cont in next post ❤️

It’s your dream, your vision, your deep, secret wish. All fantasies welcome! Please submit below. (This is psychodrama theatre therapy, and thus entirely appropriate—hopefully Instagram won’t delete!)

So excited! Love you! 💗✨Whoooosh!
‘You can only protest effectively when you love the person whose ideas you are protesting as much as you love yourself.’
That’s simple to say, but it’s hard work, being like Jesus. And I’ve been asking everyone to do that all year.
But on Friday, things will be different. On Friday, I’m hosting a Christmas Congress, and we all get to bring our worst selves to the party. You heard me, we get to have fun! Yeah, fuck Santa!
As they say in New Orleans, ‘Go on with your bad self!’
The idea is to express and dispel your darkness in preparation for the new year. Here’s how it works: We print out everyone’s head—I know, the greens have been printing out the loggers heads for ages, but no great artwork goes unstolen (around here). And everyone deserves to have their head printed out.
Next we have props:
Chainsaws
Champagne bottle
Swift parrots
Giant axe
High five hands
Middle finger
Ironing table
A bathtub
Gold medal
Big bag of money
A baby
A bed
Love hearts
Peace symbol
Giant sage stick
Now imagine a scenario. Our professional actors will perform it for you. Darkest fantasies, wildest dreams.
For example: if you’re one of the people on the Bob Brown Signal chat, you might like to take my head, put me in bed with a sawmiller, and have me pour champagne while loggers dance around a swift parrot with an axe. The sky is the limit!
Professional actors will perform your fantasy but you’re welcome to jump in and participate. Between scenes healers will energetically wash you of your pain. Whoosh, they will purify and transform your negative energy, and send your dreams into the ether.
And that’s that, all bad juju gone!
Just a little purifying ceremony before we all sit down like grownups and negotiate a pathway forward / design the future of forestry in Tasmania.
This Friday, Dec 12

#comeoncomeoncomeon #getthroughit #lovesthegreatestthing #forestcongress #merrychristmas
Come visit forest leaders for my final residential stint, and drinketh of the champagne 🍾✨ that floweth like rivers through the old growth forests of the Styx. The moss, the emerald beauty, the graceful bend of limbs. I love you Tasmania. #forestcongress #industryandenvironmentalists❤️ #loveconquersall
For decades, Tasmania’s forest wars have divided: anger and mistrust have left all sides sceptical and scarred. Yet here, in the old growth forest, they shared space. They spoke honestly. And they listened.
And something shifted. An agreement was reached! Small, but powerful:
We can move forward, together.
I don’t know what else to say, this is a complete miracle!
Miracle.
Then, (even better) in an extraordinary act of goodwill, the state forest managers, Sustainable Timber Tasmania (STT), put a hold on the harvesting of these old growth coupes to make space for the conversation:
TN050G
TN034G
TN062G / Purulia’s Stand, where Uncle Jim (purulia minamata) was arrested. These were the three contentious coupes in discussion.
To all who came with open hearts and courage, thank you. Your generosity and willingness to engage have opened a new chapter in Tasmania’s forest story.
Here is to the goodness in the world, and what connects us.
Here’s to goodwill, honesty, and a shared forest future. 🌿✨
Fuck perfect—it’s a great beginning!
I think you all deserve a drink!🥂✨🌲🌳✨🍾
I’m ready.

I welcome all voices. I contributed some criticism myself.
So much has happened! I hosted a Ladies Lounge in the forest, and a Congress beneath the canopy. I was so impressed by the attending forest leaders. The Ladies Lounge was by far superior (obvs). But the Congress was excellent. There was trust and respect from prior sessions, so people were nice to each other. That made me proud. There were things they agreed on. I left believing we can keep these old growth forests while putting industry in a position where they can produce sustainably, where workers are cared for, and communities are uplifted. Many agreed there was room for a restructure, that the whole of the forest should be considered so that high conservation areas are protected; palawa leaders are respected—can lead cultural land management practices; production can progress peacefully in areas that are suited to it, with innovative methods, like: production forests that are currently non-native monocultures could diversify into multi-species forests on long rotations (200 years for special species) without fear of being reclaimed by environmentalists. A shared commitment to grow timber well, over long timespans, in harmony with nature. I found that exciting. The realisation that fear was holding us back. The bigger realisation, that we can work together.
After serious and intense negotiation, we drank tequila (well I did) and watched some performances, a nude dancer—he wore chaps, but not much esle—and revved a chainsaw. He had trouble starting it so a forester got up to assist. An aria was performed by candlelight. A band played country standards with incredible slide guitar. The food was out of this world! The wine and conversation flowed. I got home at 2:45am. And some of us were still out!
