Often overlooked outside its flowering season, Acacia filifolia is a wispy wattle that bursts into bloom with the first winter rains.
This slender, sparsely branched shrub erupts into clusters of vivid yellow globes, glowing against its thread-like foliage. As the wind picks up the flowering branches sway gracefully, creating a mesmerizing, ever-moving display. In time long seed pods emerge, hinting that viable seeds offer a chance for renewal and regeneration of this at-risk species.
Acacia filifolia can be found scattered from near Coorow eastwards through Wongan Hills to near Burracoppin, enjoying the sand over laterite soils of this area.

Commonly knowns as Shark Bay Beaufortia, in the wild this species grows along the coastal sands of Shark Bay and southwards to Geraldton, thriving in acidic sandy soils.
This upright spreading plant reaches around 1.5m in height and width, forming a neat and structured shape. From April through to November it puts on a show with spherical white or pale pink flowers 💮

This compact shrub (up to 1.5m) is commonly called the 'Shaggy Dryandra' due to its downward turned buds, flowers and fruit. However, if you look underneath, you’ll find a beautiful surprise 🏵️
When collecting seed we gently rub the spent flower to release the follicles which are then burnt and left in an oven to slowly dry. After a few days it releases its seed.
In the wild this species grows south-west from Three Springs following the low Kwongan sandplains towards Badgingarra.
Although the Shaggy Dryandra is protected under the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016, we see it grow happily in the Western Australian Botanic Garden. Multiple specimens are flowering now around the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Memorial, down the hill from the Roe Gardens carpark 👀

Designed by Max Parker-Smith, the small show garden celebrates South Australia, and the journey between on the Indian Pacific train route. To get some first-hand inspiration, Max took the train journey himself and visited Kings Park and Botanic Garden at the end of his journey to gain a better understanding of Western Australian flora.
The 'Journey Beyond the Tracks: From Adelaide to Perth' garden has now been awarded a Silver-Gilt medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, showing that love for Australian native flora really is worldwide!

Our beautiful Giant Boab (Adansonia gregorii) was originally from the East Kimberley region 3,200 kilometres north and is over 750 years old! As such it requires some extra special care during Perth's cool, wet winters.
We keep its root system dry and warm to prevent root rot by covering the surface area at the base of the tree with black plastic pool liner with coiled agricultural pipe underneath to circulate air and assist the Boab's roots to stay healthy over winter. The cover will be removed in November ready for summer! 😎
These trees are deciduous in the winter dry season in the north, so don't be alarmed if you see Gija Jumulu looking bare over the colder months - the leaves will return in December 🍃

It's one of the most exciting days on our Horticultural calendar... the annual sowing of the Everlastings! 🌸🌸🌸
In a few weeks these babies will pop up 🌱 and by September we'll be blessed with an abundance of incredible wildflowers to take us into spring and the Everlasting Kings Park Festival 🤩
But for now, we wait... 🤭

Intricate red blooms steal the spotlight during flowering time, but this species offers so much more than a single season of colour and beauty. All year round we’re drawn to its blue‑green, coral‑shaped phyllodes (modified leaves) which bring texture and structure to the garden. Even after flowering the seed pods join the show, gently rattling as they dry and reminding us that interest doesn’t end as the flowers fade.
This species grows naturally from Eneabba southward to Badgingarra, encompassing the stunning Lesueur National Park.
👀 Here in the Western Australian Botanic Garden you can find it in the Northern Sandplains garden overlooking the Swan River and city skyline.

New to the Bush Gems 'Celebrations' range is Anigozanthos 'Valentine'; a prolific flowerer with two-toned pink blooms amongst soft grey-green foliage.
Best grown in a tub or pot in full sun, this eye-catching addition to the garden has been bred right here at Kings Park as part of our Plant Development program.
The first release is limited, so head to your local nursery soon if you want to secure one of these for your garden ahead of spring! 🌼
