It’s all true. At first, we didn’t fully understand the purpose of the projectors either.

I invite you to observe the children in relationship with the tool. Once the awe and beauty are noticed, what comes next? An Instagram picture? A decorated wall?

Is technology in early childhood meant to create cosmetic beauty in a space, or is it meant to deepen research, dialogue, investigation, and thinking?

That was the question we had to ask ourselves.
Over time, we began noticing that children did not want to passively look at projections. Sometimes, they didn’t even notice them! They wanted to interact with them, test ideas through them, move materials across them, project their drawings, enlarge details, study light, shadow, movement, transparency, color, and transformation.

That changed everything for us so the projector stopped being for decoration and became a research tool.
Paola Lopez, the extraordinary educator behind Kinderoo Academy and her team prepare environments for their students with the knowledge that they’ll never know where the children will go with the tools and materials they provide. That understanding is deeply rooted in their school philosophy of honoring the creativity, imagination, and potential of every child. Videos from our vist to to see the amazing work happening there!
The children are learning to express ideas through art using the same technology that Disney light installation artists use at the parks’ light shows. The question we’re exploring: How can children’s stories become visible through digital light installations?
What if you didn’t need all the answers to begin?

In this episode, Paola Lopez shares the story of building her schools from a place of curiosity, imagination, and deep respect for children and educators.

What emerged is a culture of inquiry, joy, and possibly - where both children and educators are given the time and space to follow their curiosity, build competence, and grow together.

It’s a powerful reminder that when we trust the process and centre relationships, something meaningful has space to unfold.

What might be possible if curiosity led you practice?

The project on time at Kinterra is developing as an open and evolving process, ignited by the interests and questions that arise in the daily life of the children. The investigation began at the start of the school year when a child arrived wearing a watch. This small object sparked conversations and observations about time, how it moves through the day, how it is experienced, and how it relates to emotions, routines, day and night.

Different contexts within the school have gradually transformed as the project unfolds. Through dialogue, play, and artistic exploration, the children have begun to represent their ideas about time using multiple languages. Drawing, construction, symbolic play, and conversation have opened new ways for the children to imagine and interpret what time means in their lives.

Materials and artistic processes have become invitations for interpretation and narrative. Through graphic language, spatial constructions, and three-dimensional explorations, the children have investigated how time can be represented and made visible. These explorations have also revealed connections between time, daily experiences, and the emotional rhythms children notice throughout their day at school.

As the project continued to evolve, the children identified a need within the school: Kinterra, being a new learning community, did not yet have clocks in the building. This realization led the children to design and construct their own clocks, creating physical and three-dimensional representations of time for their environment.

We now have several panels showcasing the process. The children’s voices and their clocks will be part of the evolving documentation of this inquiry and will be presented at Kinterra’s upcoming Digital Documentation and Visual Art Exhibit on March 27th.
I don’t post often, but my phone is full of videos and images I’ve been saving for my upcoming book with Redleaf Press. Before their resolution diminishes, I’ll begin sharing some of them here. This experience took place in August 2024 at Kinderoo. *Fairy Homes Research*
Each child recreated their own eye using lines, color, and form, resulting in a collection of unique interpretations. Every eye reflects a different perspective, a different way of seeing.
Time and Emotions at Kinterra Through the Children’s Eyes: Several weeks ago, the children began a new project inspired by the artist Joan Miró. As they explored his work, they noticed the many lines, shapes, and colors that appear across his paintings. During their observations, the children also discovered something that captured their attention: the recurring presence of the eye in many of Miró’s pieces.

This project will be showcased at this year’s Documentation and Visual Art Exhibition of Children’s Investigations at Kinterra.
Preparations are underway at Kinterra for this year’s exhibition.

More details will be shared soon as we begin assembling the documentation, artifacts, and visual works that reflect the investigations carried out by children throughout the year.
