So, I take a moment to listen: how do mind and body feel after all the running and all the excitement of the season so far? How much motivation is left? Not just for racing, but much more so for the structured routine of training itself.
For me, after Chamonix and Bad Gastein, it was difficult to find my way back into the discipline of a training plan. I just wanted to run. Not because I wanted to hit certain times, meet specific heart-rate targets, or look ahead to the next race with anticipation. I simply wanted to run. I wanted to follow my daily mood, head out into nature, listen to some great guilty pleasures, and only turn around when I wanted to, when I felt I had had enough. Not a break from the season, but a clear mission nonetheless: to look beyond the rigidity of everyday training.
I think these times throughout the year are important. At its core, it is actually quite simple, and it is one of the freedoms that comes with making a living from trail running at a high level: you strip movement back to its essentials and ask yourself what is driving you. Everything slows down without actually coming to a stop. During this particular time of year, I want to loosen the reins of structure for a moment, so that I can take hold of them again when the time is right.
The past week was one of the best training weeks I’ve had all year. Back to a training plan, back to time targets, with the final race of the season clearly in sight. But not half-heartedly or running on empty, quite the opposite: full of anticipation and with real intent.
September was a beautiful month because it had a bit of everything, and I’m convinced that was only possible because discipline and structure were allowed to take a back seat every now and then. September was the perfect in between.

We explore them, run their trails, find our favourite routes and chase success, and somehow come to see this nature as something that simply exists. As our home trails, our after-work runs, our weekend adventures and even sometimes as our identity.
We gather experiences up there, climb summits, lose ourselves in the process of reaching them rather than in the moment itself, and take the chance to do it all again the following day, the following month, the following year for granted.
Only to be reminded that not every morning is a given.
These reminders do something to us. They hurt. They teach us. They make us ask why. And they bring something back into focus: gratitude for the ordinary.
Gratitude for being allowed to move through these forces of nature. Freely and curiously.
Gratitude for a hug from someone we love. Gratitude for a home. For seemingly insignificant moments that, in hindsight, turn out to be anything but insignificant, but instead unique and incredibly beautiful.
Gratitude for our health. For a life so full of colors, one that continues to fulfill us and help us grow.
For all of this, and for so much more.
I feel that gratitude as I sit here, surrounded by green and sunlight. And at the same time, I feel torn, because of what has happened. Because suddenly, people are no longer here. And the fragility of what we consider normal becomes brutally clear.
I love the mountains, and I am deeply grateful for everything they have given me and made possible.
And yet, I see them a little differently now.
Because they are so unpredictable, sometimes even heartless and cold.
And because, in their presence, I feel so very small.

One more time putting on a bib in 2026.
One more time packing the mandatory equipment.
One more time getting up early for having my classic toast with jam before sunrise.
One more time heading to a start line and feeling that familiar excitement.
One more time giving it everything I’ve got before the season comes to an end and new plans are made.
One more time.
One more time hoping the cramps will let me run strong.
One more time putting together a race playlist.
One more time taking a gel every 20 minutes.
One more time downloading a race track.
One more time feeling the gratitude when the finish line comes into reach.
One more time standing on a start line with everything this season has taught me.
One more time. Sunday, October 18th. 🌱

It‘s the challenge that has made me feel the most uncertain throughout my career as a trail runner: finding the right amount of carbohydrates (per hour) without risking an overwhelmed stomach and/or a body that starts to resist.
I’ve tried a lot of things: the ratio of drink mix to gels, gels to electrolytes, gels to water, a carbohydrate minimum of first 60, then 70, and now up to 90g per hour. Sweat analyses together with to understand my sodium losses and compensate for them accordingly. It’s a balancing act, and whenever you find two answers, a new question seems to arise at the same time.
For OCC, I didn’t want to leave any questions unanswered. Therefore, during my race in Schnalstal, I experimented with a lot of things and found an approach that worked great for me. gels as my base. Every 20 minutes. Exactly the amount of salt I lose. Exactly the consistency I can tolerate. Exactly the amount of energy I need. Exactly the taste that still tastes good over a race lasting 6+ hours. Berry and Passionfruit, to be more precise. 🫐
Being able to race at your limit is the greatest reward after a demanding block of training. In Schnalstal, that wish came true. Unfortunately, it didn’t at OCC.
Once again, I had to deal with cramps. Once again, they slowed me down on every uphill. Once again, I felt that familiar burning in my muscles unexpectedly early in the race, along with the uncertainty that comes with it. Why again in Chamonix? Why, when I had followed my plan exactly? Just. Why.
There was no obvious deficit, just a noticeable shortfall. And although I was able to finish the race well and make up for some of the deficiencies along the way, a few question marks remain. So does the frustration, because at times it wasn’t racing, it was damage control once again.
It is, and remains, a balancing act: finding the right balance when it comes to fueling in training and racing. And yet, over the years, I’ve come so much further. We’ll keep working on it. Step by Step.

The adidas TERREX INFINITE TRAILS Team Race is a concept you’ll hardly find anywhere else. Three teammates start together before each takes on a different loop ( S, M or L) through the Gastein Valley:
🏃♀️: 21K | ~1,900m+
🏃: 36K | ~2,800m+
🏃: 45K | ~3,100m+
Together, they cover more than 100K and around 7,700m of elevation gain.
And Kimi, Josh and Danny didn’t just take the Mixed Team win. They were the fastest team overall, with each of them finishing first in their respective category 🏆
We caught up with them after the finish to hear what makes racing as a team so different from racing individually, how knowing your teammates are counting on you changes the way you race, and what they loved most about the experience.
Trail running might be an individual sport, but at INFINITE TRAILS, you race your own loop for something bigger than just your own result.
Congratulations Kimi, Josh and Danny! 🔥⛰️
The light has taken on its autumnal glow and the days get shorter. The season, even though it feels like it only just started, is already heading towards its final race of the year.
UTMB is done. Another beautiful week in Gastein has come and gone. So much has happened.
This time of year is one of my favorites. Everything starts to slow down a little, myself included. It’s not quite the off-season yet, but it offers a little glimpse of it. It feels good to take a breath and let everything sink in.
Especially the weeks in Chamonix. It’s amount of emotions and impressions was so overwhelming that, despite all the reflection and everything I’ve already processed, there’s still so much tucked away in the very back corners of my mind, waiting to be untangled.
I’m so grateful for everything 2026 has brought so far and at the same time, I’m genuinely excited for everything the coming weeks and months still have in store.
I am lucky.
