⛩️🌳🙏Last November, I spent a month at in Osaka to learn the 1,400-year-old tradition of Miyadaiku carpentry. These joints are the results of my training. While iron nails rust in decades, these wood-to-wood joints allow structures to breathe and endure for over 1,000 years. It is a living craft still used to restore Japan’s sacred landmarks.

The school is dedicated to preserving this wisdom and asked me to help share it globally. We are planning a one-month workshop in April for international students. If you are interested in joining this residency, please let me know.

I am now exploring how to “install” these techniques and the Shinto (Japan’s indigenous spirituality) concept of “Yorishiro” into my work. A Yorishiro is a physical vessel designed to welcome and house the divine. I hope to transform my sculptures into spaces where the material and spiritual converge, connecting my 8-bit roots with a level of craftsmanship that is a sacred territory of human touch and spirit, which AI and robotics cannot touch for the next decade and beyond.

🇦🇺☁️🐨I’m finally sharing these archival photos of the mosaic tile walls I designed for Tower Sydney (completed in 2022). For this project, the team requested a design that flows vertically through the 3-story atrium across the Ohana Floors.

🌈🏙️🛥️Top (L53): Salesforce Tower, Opera House, and Sydney Harbour.
🪸🐠🐐Middle (L52): The Great Barrier Reef, featuring a pixelated tribute to "The Birth of Venus" with the character Cloudy.
🫧🐋🦈Bottom (L51): The depths of the ocean with whales, sharks, and dugongs.

From digital pixels to architectural scale, it’s an honor to see my 8-bit world live permanently in such a beautiful space. Swipe to the last slide to see how the floors connect:)

☁️🟦🇦🇺 Sydney Tower that we completed in 2022. I recently found these videos showing my mosaic tile walls throughout the building. It’s always a thrill to see how my 8-bit inspired designs transform into permanent architectural features on such a grand scale from my studio in Brooklyn to the tallest tower in Sydney, and grateful for this ongoing journey since 2016.

Thank you for the amazing footage. Credit: (1st video) / (2nd video)

😎😅😊"Emotions 2" cartridge label created using Google’s Nano Banana.

I previously used Midjourney for the first Emoticons label in 2024. A year later, Nano Banana lets us modify only the parts we want with almost no friction. The center of gravity of “creativity” keeps drifting. AI is pushing us toward a mode where the thinking process matters more than the finished image itself.

Emoticons 2, 2025
Atari 2600 emulator and ROM
Programming: Ayumi Goto

1. Emoticons 2 running in the Stella emulator (screen capture).
2. Installation view at Shibuya Pixel Art.
3. Emoticons (first version) on the Atari 2600, 2023.

This series looks at emoticons as text-based emotion, and revisits their history through a simple, playable installation. For I expanded my 2023 assembly piece Emoticons (see the 3rd video). Now there are 15 emotions scrolling up the center. You can move two Emoticons with the joysticks. When they hit a wall or each other, phrases from Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, final movement, Ode to Joy play, and the faces switch expression to match the word they collide with. Examples in the set include BLANK for:l 😐, GLAD for:> ☺️, and COOL where the face puts on sunglasses 😎 as we prob could write it like Bl??

By applying reverse remediation (emoji like 😎 to ASCII), I show both the continuity and the break between emoticons and emoji. Timeline highlights: 1982 “:-) /:-(” on a bulletin board at Carnegie Mellon University, the word emoticon from Emotion + Icon around 1986, 1999 first emoji (えもじ = え Pictures + もじ Texts) in Japan, 2008 emoji on iPhone in Japan, 2011 worldwide. The core question is simple: How far can we encode feelings as symbols? Here I map text, sound, and faces to test that:)

🏙️🍕🚢A permanent tile installation on the 57th-floor Ohana Floor of Tower Chicago at 333 Wolf Point Plaza, one of Chicago's most iconic locations. This mural captures the city’s vibrant energy by highlighting the iconic Y shape of the Chicago River through a pixelated lens, creating a dialogue between digital aesthetics and physical space. Can you guess who the famous people from Chicago are in the last slide?

This project is part of a global collaboration with Salesforce to integrate art into their architectural vision, turning office spaces into community hubs through the Ohana Floor initiative.

🍕🚲🧢 Installation view of my solo exhibition “Pizza Boy” at, in collaboration with

Since July 2021, I have been pushing the technical boundaries of the Atari 2600, a video game console originally released in the US in 1977. From developing custom AR systems to producing original game ROMs, the journey was complex and challenging. This exhibition marks the realization of a long-term vision I had imagined from the very beginning. An unexpected discovery was the integration of LED matrix panels. This material, which I hadn’t utilized since my 2017 exhibition, proved to be a perfect match for the Atari 2600 aesthetics. This fusion has opened new possibilities for the series' evolution beyond what was initially planned.
