Designing Together: An Exploration of Collective
Housing in Milan
Throughout the semester, the studio explored contemporary collective housing through a project located in the Corvetto district of Milan. Each student developed a group of housing units integrated into a larger collective proposal, understanding architecture as a system of relationships and collaboration.
Rather than isolated buildings, the work focused on shared spaces — courtyards, circulation areas, gardens, and access systems — as essential structures for collective life. Inspired by the traditional Milanese cascine, the projects reinterpreted vernacular forms through a contemporary lens, exploring new ways of living together and sharing space.
The semester concluded with a collective model built by sixty participants, reflecting an ongoing process of exchange, coordination, and the construction of a shared vision for the site
We are successfully completing this first phase thanks to the joint efforts of the Palavecino Municipality, the Unidad Docente Extramuros EACRV, and Dislocal. This achievement is the result of the hard work between a dedicated team of local residents, public authorities, professionals, students, as well as the generous support of our partners: Elías Sánchez Taller de Herrería, LumenBox, Milagros Sánchez arquitectos, MPM, Sousa Supply, whose contributions have bolstered the municipal budget allocated for this project.
We are actively seeking new collaborations and support to move forward with the next phases of construction. If you would like to contribute, you can do so by contacting us at.
The project focused on finding the right balance between local knowledge, materials, and construction techniques to build these complex spaces. A key element of the design was the use of rammed earth reflective walls, developed to create a high-performance acoustic environment for musicians.
The project is currently on hold, but we remain hopeful that funding will be secured so it can move forward—benefiting kids and teens in one of Cape Town’s most socially complex yet vibrant communities.

Mucuchies, Venezuela
2015-
In 2015, we began this project for the páramo orchestras foundation in Mucuchíes, Venezuela, a 17.000 habitants town situated at 3000m in the Venezuela’s andes. The foundation affiliated with entrusted us with a dream that musicians, teachers, parents, and community members had already set in motion: to build a permanent home capable of welcoming more than 3,000 children from surrounding towns—one that has become a symbol of social and cultural development for the entire region.
They are the ones who, empowered and organized, manage, coordinate, and carry this ambitious project forward. Through —initially as a collective and today individually—we contributed to the design of inclusive, shared spaces where music serves as a driving force for social transformation.
This is a situated project: conceived and built using local materials and knowledge. Through sustained effort, and despite the lack of state support, the community has gradually advanced in constructing its headquarters. It stands as a powerful example of civic strength: when a community joins forces with professionals and sustains an unwavering commitment, meaningful progress can be achieved beyond bureaucracy.
Today, the community is organizing to seek support from both the private and public sectors in order to complete the first phase of the project.
Our sincere thanks to The Space Factory and Kahle Acoustics for their generous professional contributions.

Some sketches of what is coming.
This house has been taking shape for some time as a conceptual framework, atesting ground for ideas about space, climate, and inhabitation. With an actual plot now defined, the project begins its slow descent from abstraction into the ground itself.
To be built in Venezuela, the exercise is no longer only formal. It demands scale, weight, and consequence: materials that exist, constructive know-how that is local, budgets that are real, and a climate that is not a background condition but a driving force. The project is becoming a negotiation between intention and reality, between what is imagined and what can be made.
This is a process of translation: from sketch to territory, from concept to matter, from desire to capacity. It is long, sometimes uncertain, but essential. Because architecture only truly begins when ideas accept friction with place.
The path is long, but that friction is precisely where meaning, and value, emerge.
Collective Video-GIF, 2014
In 2014, Topografía Inversa was a collective exercise to think about El Helicoide from a distance, from its edges and surrounding neighborhoods. Confronting an architecture conceived as a modern utopia [a concrete artificial topography] we proposed an inverse action: to look at it from the outside in order to make it visible again, recognizable, and open to discussion.
If at that time we imagined a concave and green promenade that confronted the concrete machine with the living city, today that gesture finds an echo in the possibility of resignification: transforming a monument of repression into a place of encounter, memory, and creativity. Topography is no longer only physical; it is political and ethical. It is the way we weave history with future expectations, how we resignify values, and how we reconfigure spaces that were once symbols of control into signs of emancipation.
Topografía Inversa was not a work about impossible utopias, but a collective reflection on memory, architecture, and politics, and on the power of imagination as a critical tool for opening possible futures.

Suelo/Sombra/Luz.
