I don’t know if you know this but it’s Father’s Day today. I’ve been dreading this day for some time now, kinda wishing we could just skip it this year. I really miss you; a lot of people really miss you. My first Father’s Day as a dad, and my first Father’s Day without my own. I still can’t believe Leo won’t ever know his Grandpa, not in this physical realm of life, at least.. and Ava, Nolan, and Kellan won’t get to grow older with you as their grandpa. And Chels doesn’t get to have you as her Dad nearly as long as she should’ve.. I love how she made you laugh.. I miss your laugh. It’s a huge damn shame… and sometimes I still get kinda mad about it, sometimes sad, and sometimes it somehow just feels.. settled.. Dang.. Leo would’ve loved you. I sure do love him Dad, and you would too. People say he looks like you. I don’t really see it yet, and maybe people just wanna be nice, but either way it’s a really nice thought. I have so much to be grateful for, and so much of that.. most of that.. is because of you and mom. The way you raised me, respected me, loved me. I hope one day I can be half as good a dad as you were to me. You made me feel safe my whole life, like I always had a safe haven no matter how hard things got. Even if sometimes you drove me crazy with your questions and your persistence, I understand you more and more the older I get. You just loved me. You just love me. And I love you dad. I hope you’re resting well wherever you are. Happy Father’s Day ❤️

In some ways, it’s been the most challenging period of my life.
Trying to process the finality of death while balancing the untethered emotions that grief brings.. will teach you a lot about yourself and about those around you. I’ve been tired now for a couple weeks.. emotionally and socially. I’ve found that my emotions aren’t as trustworthy as they once were, and might need awhile yet before I have the trust I once had for them. Patience is important. One of the hardest parts.. the part that truly tears me up is that our new baby boy will never get his grandpa. In spirit, sure, but it’s not the same.
In other ways, I’ve spent the better part of my adult life planning for this. Not this, specifically, the death of my dad.. but this, generally, life’s ever-changing unpredictability and relentless unfairness. Learning how to breathe through discomfort and pain.. learning how to disconnect emotion from self identity.. grappling with the concept that my joy and pain is not more important than your joy and pain. As difficult as it has been, I can feel the years of work helping me through this, keeping me from whirling into an even deeper pit, teaching me gratitude in the midst of despair, reminding me that light and dark only exist with the other.
With this, though, there’s nothing that can truly prepare you for your first huge permanent loss, no book to read or advise to take. And even after the loss.. there’re small comforts and bigger ones, but nothing to fill the hole that was.. the person now gone. My friend Josh told me, “Time doesn’t heal the wound. It can’t. A piece of yourself is gone, and as morbid as that sounds I think it’s reasonable too.” I agree.
My dad was a really, really good man. He left us at age 68, which feels so young. He also lived a great life, with a beautiful wife, kids that adored him, a fulfilling career, and a never-ceasing curiosity for truth, which I hope he now understands more completely.
He gave his all to this life and the people around him, and he will be remembered that way. Love you, dad.
