This one took me by surprise. It was dark and very stream of consciousness, which worked so well for the story. I’m not sure if it was the formatting of the drc I read or if this book is supposed to be written in verse... either way, I LOVED IT!!
This was incredibly atmospheric. We have a group of girls who have insulated themselves on their cheerleading team. They are a family with a hierarchy and a solid bond. When their beloved coach brings a new girl into the mix, it throws everyone off. Ultimately, this creates a toxic environment, no matter what the intention was and it brings into question (for me) the legitimacy of the coach’s motives. How could you not see the problems this could pose, girlfriend?
Meanwhile, there is a doe lurking in the surrounding woods. This is a creature who has lived long, bound in its body by generations past. She longs for release and finds the answer in the cheer captain and fearless leader, Maris. With an unknown connection to how the doe was bound, Maris begins seeing the doe in her dreams and becomes part of her plot.
The way that love/hate and obsession all play together within these characters and their interactions was perfection. There are no illusions that things they are doing are bad, but we also see the motivations behind them and what is at stake. I could have happily gobbled up a couple hundred more pages of this book. I want a follow up... and at the same time, I am content with how all of this ended. I loved every second of this book!

Besson’s books are always biting and intense. This follow up to Lie With Me (which I loved) is no different. It had that sense of looming tragedy but in a wholly different way. This is slice of life at it’s finest, demonstrating that final teenage summer together, future just ahead of you. Not sure if you want to stand still or take that next step. The desperation... the desire. And this group of friends is right on that precipice with no idea that soon, nothing will ever be the same.
This is beautifully written, cutting, and heartbreaking. I loved it.

As soon as she can clean out Barb’s house, the sooner they can go home. Strange secrets are held in the various rooms of this large home, but it is the discovery of a secret attic that wakes Addison up to how weird Barb was. With her long standing feud with crows in her yard, her creepy crafting habits, and her hatred of pretty much everyone who wasn’t her son Luke, there seems to be something darker about Barb, and the more Addison learns, the more terrified she becomes.
This was really masterful. Conradt can really spin a story and I am here for it. Addison is such a great protagonist. She is intelligent and capable. The feelings of inadequacy she struggles with when it comes to Barb, the woman who means so much to the man who means so much to her. I felt that! Also, I’m a big fan of crows and their various little funny habits, so having that be a significant part of the story was delightful. The deeper, darker mystery at the heart of this book was so well done. There were many elements that came together for this spooky thematic thriller and I loved it! From the start of this book, to the very end... so good.

This is an overall unsettling and tense read, braced against a backdrop of hot and hazy Savannah. This is dark and gothic in all of the best ways.
This perfectly ran that razor’s edge of mystical and rooted in reality. I loved Ingrid and the ways she maneuvers through her abilities, through this elite class. Her growth and sense of self were great to see.
I enjoyed the writing, the pace, and the immersive southern backdrop. I definitely recommend!

This is a funny and swoony murder mystery where two people who both want to forget about each other having to work together to find the real killer. I did not want this to end, it was so much fun!
Harriet is low on luck, having been fired from her fancy magazine job, and is now living back at home with her parents, er... mother and stepfather. At Harriet’s birthday party, that she didn’t throw, want, or really know many people, a murder occurs that shocks everyone.
Nic also didn’t want to be there, but with his family catering the event, there was no choice. He didn’t want to see Harriet, that’s for sure. Not after what happened between them years ago. Now, Nic’s sister is the prime suspect in the murder.
Neither Harriet or Nic think his sister is responsible, but in order to uncover the truth, the two must work together. Through the push and pull of their feelings about one another to the potentially dangerous mystery they are poking around, Harriet and Nic manage to be a heartwarming, stubborn, and intelligent duo. I loved their banter. I loved the shenanigans. This is filled with a great cast of supporting characters, a fun setting and the absolute most drama.
This writing is so full of humor and heart. I had the best time reading this. I read the paperback along with listening to the audio because this book deserves a fully immersive reading experience. The narration by both Joy Nash and Sean Patrick Hopkins was to die for. They both deliver banter and punch lines in a way that had me goofy-grinning through the whole book.

This is raw and beautiful. I loved the characters through their hard times, their flaws, and their wins. This shows queer Afghan characters who just want to live their lives while facing injustice, rampant homophobia, fear, and loss, maneuvering through rejection in it’s many forms, and desire. This is found family when yours turns you away or distance separates you. This is discovery of self. This is standing up and fighting for what is right. This is combatting others’ expectations. No God but Us crosses languages and borders in search for freedom.
I loved this incredible debut and cannot wait to read what Bobuq Sayed writes next!
