Behind every bolt turned and every coat of paint on EJ&E Caboose No. 530 is a group of dedicated volunteers who make it all happen. From sourcing and installing new brake parts to scrubbing decades of grime off the car body, these folks have been putting in serious time and effort to bring this 1956 caboose back to life.
Some traveled long distances, others brought years of rail experience—and all of them brought passion and pride to the project. It’s this kind of teamwork that keeps preservation moving forward.
The caboose will keep its classic EJ&E orange for now, but one day it’ll roll out relettered as KSHC 530—ready for a new chapter at Kentucky Steam.

This massivebridge remains in service today. Here's what it looks like now:
This #ThrowbackThursday comes courtesy of the Peterson Family. Thanks for allowing us to share this beautiful image.
This office crew worked at the Ravenna Passenger Depot, handling $60,000 in shop stock issues every month ($953,013 today), plus plenty of other work. With 15 more clerks beyond this group, they worked 5.5 days a week but got paid for six — a well-earned perk!
From left to right: Fred MeLemore (Accountant), George Waterfield (Clerk), Oran Richardson (Stenographer), and W.H. Douglas (Storekeeper). The photographer made them remove their glasses for the picture — doesn’t it look like they’re about to cry?
This fascinating glimpse into the past comes from our museum docents, Elmer Beckler and Roger Richardson.

Ravenna owes its very existence — and name — to the railroad. In 1915, the Louisville & Nashville Railroad (L&N) transformed the area into a bustling terminal on its EK Subdivision just east of Irvine, the county seat. To support its operations, the railroad built an entire town, complete with locomotive and car shops, a yard, office buildings, a passenger station, and a freight house. This effort turned the once-rural landscape into a thriving community.
To improve efficiency, the L&N completed a new alignment in 1916 between Irvine and Winchester (Patio), replacing the primitive “Riney-B” Railroad line that extended east from Versailles through Richmond to Irvine. It was plagued with steep grades of up to 1.7%, making operations challenging and inefficient. In contrast, the new alignment reduced the ruling grade to just 0.4%, though it required the construction of two massive trestles (the highest and longest on the L&N system).
The name “Ravenna” was inspired by an Italian connection. The EK was constructed by thousands of Italian workers who spoke little to no English. While constructing the terminal, an Italian foreman and interpreter working for the L&N Railroad suggested naming the community after his hometown of Ravenna, Italy. His request resonated with railroad officials, who agreed, and the name was adopted. Over time, the shops and rail facilities transformed the area into a vibrant city with over 1,100 people calling it home.
The photo shows approximately the same location as "The Yard" — our outdoor music venue.
