Rescuing a dog is more than just an adoption. There are perks 😉 In time, their personality will begin to show. You'll get to learn their goofy quirks. They'll become more and more themselves the longer they live with you, feeling safe and comfortable and taken care of. Nothing beats seeing a dog finally just...relax.
Each rescue dog has their own backstory that shapes them, as do we. If you're ready to provide a warm bed, or ample time in the sun, or nighttime snuggles, or long woodsy hikes to a dog whose been waiting their whole lives for you, we have plenty of them ☺️ And they can't wait to meet you when we open at 1 pm today! ❤

We discussed the role of Animal Shelters and how they have evolved. We're no longer just housing stray animals. We are also:
- Providing public safety support to Animal Control and Law Enforcement
- Offering behavioral support for pet owners
- Coordinating reunification services and fostering
- And more
Here are some year-to-date highlights:
- 459 spay/neuter surgeries
- 692 animals arriving in our care, including dogs, cats, rabbits, and birds
- Over 4000 pounds of pet food distributed to the community
A huge thank you to the Commissioners for taking the time, and to the staff and volunteers who make this essential work possible!
We have so many pups still waiting to find their forever homes. 🏠

Buttercup was surrendered to us from a busy home (reportedly growing up with kids of all ages and had lots of people coming and going) due to no fault of her own. Her owners have fallen on hard times and no longer have housing for themselves, or poor Buttercup. 😔 She thrived in her home, but the shelter is a new kind of chaos that she is not used to. 💔
She's anxious, she's nervous, but most of all, she's confused. She's 8 years old and has only ever known one home, and the shelter is NOT like her home. We are having a hard time getting this lady to eat, which means she's also not taking any medication to help her with her anxiety here. 🥺 Buttercup can be a little wary of strangers but give her just a moment and she will quickly approach and nudge you for pets.
Buttercup is not thriving in this environment, she wants to get back into a home and settle back in, she wants to feel secure enough to EAT again. 😮💨 She promises to be the best girl. 🫶 Buttercup is a whippet/lab mix, 8 years old, and weighs 75 pounds. She is spayed, and up to date on her vaccinations. She is READY to wiggle her way into your heart and home. 🥰🫂
Did you know every single Wednesday (whether posted on social media or not) we have a dog adoption special?!
Today’s 🍀Lucky pick🍀 is any thing with 4 legs is $70 to adopt!
That is a DEAL that includes the dogs being microchipped, spayed/neutered and up to date on vaccines! 🥳🙌🎊
Right now we have a ✨variety✨ of breeds to browse. If you love a sweet, solid senior we have quite a few of those 🥰 We also have a few dogs thought would enjoy a dog friend at home if dog friendly is what you’re looking for. 😏
♣️Come and see us at 740 Fuller ave NE from 1-6:15 for a dog adoption today! We hope to see you ♠️
In case you missed it: We celebrated 85 years of the Kent County Animal Shelter earlier this month. Part of the celebration was introducing our new mascot, named with YOUR help!

People are usually curious to see a dogs kennel presence but we no longer have people walk through kennels to pick a dog to meet with. Why is that? What the dogs act like when someone familiar walks through the kennels compared to people they have never met, there is a huge difference. You don’t get to see them relaxing, instead you only see dogs reacting to a random presence. This is what our kennels are able to look and sound like since we give the dogs the chance to have routine quiet time in the kennel area during the day. Overall, the dogs seem to be much more relaxed, in and out of their kennels, with more quiet time and less random foot traffic. The staff and volunteers spend time with the dogs daily and create a comfortable routine here, but it will never replace a loving home.
The dogs can be so excited (or nervous!) to have an adoption meeting and you’re likely meeting a dog at their most stressed out & cooped up. You usually have to take a dog home, learn each other’s boundaries and get into a new routine together - growing a bond takes time! To go from a home, to the streets, to a kennel, to meeting new people in a room being called a name you’re not even sure is your own - these dogs can go through a lot in a short period of time. These pups deserve all the love & patience in the world, and there’s a team of people behind them working to maintain their well being every day. We have so many awesome dogs waiting to meet you!
KCAS could not function without the support and care of the staff, volunteers and public who adopt, donate and advocate for shelter dogs. Thank you to everyone who plays a part in any way of keeping this place going.
The last slide is of our adoption process. If you’ve been curious about how to meet animals and/or adopt from KCAS, hopefully this can ease any questions as to how to go about it. No appointments needed.
