From being diagnosed at 8 years old with a very rare autoimmune and connective tissue disease called Scleroderma that led to painful contractures and deformities in her joints to undergoing many surgeries at the age of 18, ultimately leading to the amputation of her right leg, Kelsey has faced adversity with a grace, determination, and resilience that is rare. Her story has been one of discovering the beauty in flaws, encountering the deep love of God, and experiencing Him take something so painful and turning it into a story of hope and a purpose to encourage others in their journeys.
Now confident in who she is and who God has created her to be, Kelsey carries a passion and drive that has led her to achieve amazing accomplishments despite all the challenges she faced. And not only that, she actively uses her voice and her story to be a beacon of hope and courage to so many others. I used to be so so hyper aware of every single scleroderma scar and vitiligo discoloration. And then especially the new season of life I entered after losing my leg. I’m not going to lie, I still have off days where I’m totally in my head about these things. But they’ve become increasingly less frequent and I feel so empowered in a tank and shorts instead of hiding in sweats.
Now ^^ I’m choosing outfits that highlight the beautiful aspects that make me unique. Fully confident in my skin. In love with how truly badass my leg is. And beyond excited to work with an agency that stands by and exemplifies how everyone: no matter their race, size, ethnicity, or ability, should see representations of themselves in mass media. Exciting stuff coming 😊

Premiered at {SLAMDANCE} last week and just announced today, will be screening at next month! I have so many overflowing feelings about this project and a running list of thoughts I’m not sure how to articulate at the moment. However I can put words to this being a huge step towards mass representation of people with differently abled bodies that goes beyond the traditional “trauma porn” and exploitation of experiences. And this right here, is something I’ve deeply wanted to be able to see since my diagnosis 8 years old. If I could hold the hand of my younger self (age 8 through honestly the version of me last year) and show her this ^^^?!?!? A story told by and about someone with a body that looks like hers? A community and a shareable expression of an experience even remotely similar to hers? And that this was only the beginning of a massive movement much larger than her?? Projects like this, directors and story tellers like, studios like, are the basis of redefining the immensely flawed societal perspective of my community. Idk y’all. That’s all I got right now. The rest I’ll keep close to my heart. Emotional and excited for this journey 💕
