I carried this home from Talisker Bay on the Isle of Skye. Black sand and this thing lying there as if it had been waiting for someone foolish enough to pick it up. I was that someone. Actually, it was my daughter but I claim it for me because I had the anxiety of not losing her to the sea.
It is a branch. A shrubbery from the holy grail. Or a root. A twig! The Atlantic spent a few decades bending it into shape, and I spent a few millions nerve cells on how to transport it in a full suitcase without crashing it.
As the first wave of summer assignments came to a hold because of our dear weather, the Twig of Talisker (c) lives in the corner of the studio and looks at me. And I look back, and I reach for the obvious thing, which for me is always the same thing. Dark room. One light. A bit of classical painting and a lot of self congratulation. I have made that picture before. Several times. It is a good picture. I would like, just once, to be surprised instead.
So this is me asking. I am looking for a model who arrives with more than a face. Someone who looks at a windbent branch from a Scottish beach and sees something I have not. Studio or outdoors, I am open. The twig, frankly, has no preferences left.
