3年ぶりの大学日本一を狙う関西学院大学ファイターズと東京大学ウォリアーズの交流戦が5月31日、大阪府吹田市のMKタクシーフィールドEXPOであり、関学が24-14で勝った。昨春の対戦では70-0だっただけに、東大ディフェンスの奮闘が目立った試合だった。関学は3番手のQBとしてWRのリンスコット トバヤス（4年､箕面自由学園）を投入。2年ぶりのQB起用に関学側のスタンドがざわめいた。
エースQBの星野太吾（3年､足立学園）はこの日も16回投げて12回のパス成功で187ydをゲインして1TDと盤石だが、秋シーズンを考えたとき2番手に不安があるのは否めない。そこでチームのベストアスリートで高校までずっとQBだったトビーを試すことになった。17-14と迫られた第4クオーター5分すぎのオフェンスから関学の0番がQBに入った。TE高岸大空テオドール（2年､報徳学園）への縦パスを通して30ydをゲインしたが、次はフレッシュならずにFGに出たが失敗。
2度目のシリーズは東大のギャンブル失敗でゴール前34ydから。第1ダウンで高校からのチームメイトであるWR酒井蒼昌（4年）へ24ydのパスを通し、ゴール前10ydへ。最後はRB星野礼翔（らいと､1年､鎌倉学園）に中央付近を突かせる形から抜いてトビーが持ち、星野の後ろからエンドゾーンへ飛び込んだ。
「東大戦はQBでいくかもしれんから」とコーチ陣に言われ、数日間だけ練習した。2年生の春の関大戦にQBで出てから練習もしていなかったという。「感覚が完全に抜けてるんで、取り戻すのに精一杯でした」とトビー。パスについては高校時代に気持ちよく投げていた感じは戻っていないものの、この日はサイドラインから相手ディフェンスを見て、空くところが分かっていたため投げ込めたそうだ。
この日3回見せた「抜き」のQBキープに関しては、自分自身のフットボールIQの高まりを実感した。「ディフェンスのつき方を見てたらギャップが開いてたんで、エンドが詰めるのは分かりきってて、あとはアウトサイドからLBがブリッツで入ってたんで、それを縦に抜けられたらいいなと思ってました。実際にやったらエンドが詰めてLBが入ってくれたんで、その隙間を通れました。高校のときはエンドでリードしてただけで、ここまで予想できなかった。関学に来てから大村さんを始めコーチ陣にオフェンスを教えてもらってきたから、いろいろ考えられてやりやすくなってますね」
今後については信頼するコーチ陣の方針に従うだけだと強調した。「QBでと言われたら100％以上の準備をして期待以上のプレーができるようにしますし、レシーバーでも同じ。チームのために必要なところで全力でできるように、そのときそのときでやっていけたらいいと思ってます」
中学時代からトビーとともにプレーしてきたOLの谷内志郎（4年）は「むっちゃうれしかったです」と笑った。「トビーがQBに入ると、僕の主観ですけどテンポがいい。僕はそれがすごくフィットするんです」と語った。WR小段天響（4年､大産大附）は「僕はQBのトビーと一緒にやりたいと思って関学に入ったので、個人的には最高です。QBをやるとなったときのトビーの取り組み方はすごいです。誰よりも早くグラウンドに出て、最後に帰る。『ザQB』みたいな。そのトビーと一緒にやれるのは誇りです。走れて投げられて捕れるというのは敵の脅威になると思うので、そういう存在として一緒にやりたいです」と、熱っぽく話した。
大村和輝監督は「やれるんちゃいますか。それなりには」と評価した。6月14日には春の集大成として関西大学カイザーズとの関関戦に臨む。（アメフト屋）

西日本学生大会の摂南大―鳥取大が5月31日、大阪府吹田市のMKタクシーフィールドEXPOであった。2点を追う試合残り8秒からのプレーで、摂南大の左利きのキッカー石川堯野（たくや､3年､大阪府立汎愛）が32ydのフィールドゴール（FG）を決め、劇的な逆転勝ちを飾った。
第3クオーターまでのヒーロー候補は鳥取大のキッカー小幡兼幹（けんき､3年､京都府立宮津天橋）だった。3本のFGをすべて決めて9得点。小幡はOL、DLとしても奮闘していた。第2クオーターにゴール前まで攻め込みながらもファンブルロストしていた摂南大は、第3クオーター終盤からのシリーズをようやくモノにする。最後はRB笠原佑太（1年､京都両洋）が2ydを持ち込んでタッチダウン。7-9と迫った。
次の相手オフェンスの最初のプレーで、摂南大のDB福井悠吾（1年､京都両洋）がインターセプト。ゴール前28ydと願ってもないフィールドポジションからのオフェンスとなったが、石川が41ydのFGを力んで右に外した。
次に回ってきた自陣31ydからのオフェンスでは、要所でQB細川千陽（ちあき､3年､大阪府立汎愛）からWR森葵海（あおい､2年､大阪府立大塚）へのパスが決まり、12プレーを重ねてゴール前15ydに迫った。残りは8秒。FGだ。これを石川が失敗を引きずらずに蹴りこんだ。残り1秒。最後のキックオフカバーでしっかりタックルし、摂南大に歓喜の瞬間が訪れた。
「最後どんどん進んでいって、ヤバいと思いました（笑）。その前に外してたんでめっちゃ緊張したんですけど、きれいに決まってよかったです。こんな場面で蹴るのは初めてで、いい経験になりました」。石川の笑顔がはじけた。
高校ではサッカー部に入ったが、1年もしないうちにやめた。大学では何かスポーツをやりたいと思ってアメフト部の新歓に参加したら面白そうで、入部した。いまはDBとキッカーで試合に出ている。サッカーのときからずっとスパイクはミズノのモナルシーダ。「変えたらあかんな、と思ってずっと履いてます」と石川。
FGを蹴る前、Hポールに向かって狙いを定める動きを、わざと大きくしているという。「大げさにやることでリラックスしようと思って」。大事にしているのは「平常心」。最後の大事な場面でも自分に言い聞かせ、いい集中ができた。
秋のシーズンはDBとしてディフェンスを引っ張る選手になりたい。そして「全部決めるキッカーになります」と宣言した。（アメフト屋）
