African elephants represent the textbook definition of what it means to live in a matriarchal society. Watching them roam the acacia littered grasslands felt nothing short of familial. The way each individual herd interacted with such knowingness and intention really illustrated just how well these animals function in a matriarchal society.
With mothers day coming up, I knew I wanted to feature them this month for the print club. There’s one particular image that I edited for my grandma and I was able to show her just a few days before she passed away. I told her that she was the matriarch and the elephants in the image represented her leading my mom who led me (3 eles in a row). She laughed and shrugged it off, not knowing how true it was. I think she can see it now.

I think one of the most beautiful descriptors one could use to describe my work is “dreamy”. In part I know it’s a reflection of my chosen editing style, but I also cant help but think about how surreal it is to describe the real, very tangible natural world as dreamlike. Its all a wonderful contradiction that just proves how good we really have it here on Earth.
This is the dream world. We are the collective. I’m starting a print club.
I, along with so many of you, are desperate for a way to connect with physical media in a world where it feels hard to step away from screens. The Dream World Collective is a way to slow down and find a little slice of nature in your mailbox every month.
Each month I’ll choose a new species and an accompanying art style. Every collection will come with a 5x7 photo print, a sticker, and a species info card — but that’s only the beginning. I have so many ideas… more to come later.
April is centered around the one and only Brown Bear (Ursus arctos) and features a beautiful female romping about the fireweed fields. To receive the April collection, sign up before April 15!

This might be a hot take but I think in order to truly love wildlife photography, your mindset must shift to allow for the nuances of nature. Animals are challenging to find and even more challenging to shoot. You must fall in love with the simple fact that you’re experiencing the natural world in its purest form and have the creative capacity to take full advantage if you’re lucky enough to share that space with other creatures. Entering these moments with the mindset of “if this happens then I will stretch my muscles the way I’ve trained but if it doesn’t im still here & thrilled” is (in my opinion) the basis of good photography (and art). That’s the part where you give the work a part of your soul.
Shift your perspective and the dream world opens up around you.

I think as time goes on & ai advances, our jaded response to generated imagery will turn to complete rejection of the concept (if it hasn’t already). Even as the images become technically better, they still lack all essence of the human condition & that’s something that can never be generated by any amount of processing.

I’m sure this comes as a surprise to absolutely no one, but being consistently online is something I struggle with. I know it’s necessary for all my silly little dreams to come true but I haven’t yet found a particularly thrilling method of sharing with the world. Not only do I feel the tension there, I’ve noticed myself sinking further into my creative endeavors and shying away from the analytical ones. I’m trying to embrace what my soul needs but it’s hard to even get up and do anything at all sometimes.
I guess what I’m saying is that the more I let myself lean the easier it is to fall, and that feels better than nothing. What Im also saying is there will likely be changes in the way I share the world on here and I’m honestly stoked about it. Sorry if none of this made sense, plz enjoy the cool collage 💕 ily❤️ -kla
