Today, Natalie, our Agricultural Stewardship Assistant, is highlighting the rain garden located near the Field Centre at Ken Reid Conservation Area!
This low-lying garden helps manage runoff water from the surrounding area by allowing native plant species to soak up excess water, reduce pooling, and naturally filter the water before it continues through the watershed.
Fun fact: this rain garden contains 15 different native plant species and also has an underground chamber capable of storing up to 1,800 L of water! 🌧️
A beautiful example of how nature and innovative design can work together to help protect our environment.

This spring, Kawartha Conservation staff monitored chloride (salt) levels in Sturgeon Lake and Pigeon Lake during sensitive fish spawning periods.
Using a Petite Ponar sediment sampler, staff collected samples from both shallow shoreline areas and deeper waters to help assess how road salt runoff may affect aquatic life.

The additional mulch will help improve muddy and low-lying areas, creating a cleaner, safer, and more comfortable space for both dogs and their owners to enjoy.
The dog park is just one of many areas our Conservation Lands team helps maintain across the watershed. From trail systems and conservation areas to restoration projects, signage, infrastructure, habitat work, and visitor experience improvements, staff work year-round to help ensure these shared natural spaces remain welcoming and accessible for the community.
We also want to thank our dog park users who continue to help keep the area clean and enjoyable for everyone. Community stewardship plays an important role in maintaining these spaces, and we appreciate the care and respect shown by so many visitors.

Recently, Kawartha Conservation staff instructed the Ontario Benthos Biomonitoring Network (OBBN) certification course as part of our Innovation Hub project.
Fourteen participants from across southern Ontario took part in the certification course, learning how aquatic organisms such as insects, crustaceans, and worms can help evaluate the health of lakes, streams, and wetlands.
The course included:
📚 Classroom lectures at the Field Centre
🌊 Field sampling in Lindsay
🔬 Laboratory work using microscopes
These organisms act as bioindicators, helping scientists better understand aquatic ecosystem health and environmental conditions across Ontario.

The team recently repaired one of the boardwalks connecting the Cedar Forest Loop & Point Loop, completed brush cleanup, and added new signage for easier access around the trails, including the Group Camp area!
