Mr. Suigenkyo, who has been documenting the creation of the seated Jizo Bosatsu statue since the very first chisel ceremony, visited again to film the uchiguri (hollowing) process.
I am truly grateful that each stage of this journey is being carefully recorded.

外からは見えない部分ですが、見えないところにも丁寧に手を入れることで、長い年月を支える事ができます。
I am hollowing out the inside of the torso of the seated Jizo Bosatsu statue.
This process is called uchiguri, a traditional technique that is essential in Buddhist sculpture.
It helps prevent the wood from cracking as it naturally dries and also reduces the weight of the statue.
Although this work will never be seen from the outside,
it is a vital step in creating a sculpture that will endure for generations.

This is the rough-carving stage of the right hand that will hold the monk’s staff (shakujo).
Rather than simply creating a hand that grasps the staff,
I carve while imagining a gesture that conveys compassion and the intention to step toward and help others.
Even subtle movements of the fingers and the expression of the hand
can influence how the spirit of the figure is perceived.
As I work, I carefully shape the feeling contained within that single moment.

蓮台からそっと降り、人々のもとへ歩み寄るお姿を思いながら制作しています。
全体の流れを見ながら少しずつお姿を形に
This is the rough-carving stage of the left leg,
the leg that is about to take its first step forward.
As I carve, I imagine the figure gently stepping down from the lotus pedestal
and moving toward those in need.
Even subtle differences in shape and angle
can influence the feeling of kindness and purpose within that step.
Carefully considering the balance of the entire figure,
I continue bringing the form to life little by little.

蓮台から降り、左足から第一歩を踏み出そうとするお姿。
その歩みの始まりとなる左足の膝を彫り出しています。
わずかな角度や量感の違いが、お姿の動きや空気感を大きく左右するため、全体の流れを見ながら少しずつ形を探っていきます。
Rather than sitting quietly upon the lotus pedestal,
this figure is depicted stepping down, taking the first step forward with the left foot.
I am now carving the knee of that left leg,
the very beginning of this movement.
Even subtle differences in angle and volume can greatly affect the sense of motion and presence,
so I continue shaping it carefully while considering the balance of the entire figure.
