The key to this one was keeping the blue sky muted and dark enough to allow the warm colors in the cloud to glow. Skyscapes are always a delicate balance, especially in direct light like this.

This one started as a plein air piece in Florida in March. I was captivated by the sunlight pouring through dense fog at sunrise while staying at Cape San Blas and finally painted it on the last day. I brought the piece home and was thankful for the additional studio time, which allowed me to do justice to it better.
Tour the South Island of New Zealand for ten days with me next February 3-13. We'll paint each day on private stations (ranches) and get access to views that aren't typically accessible to the public thanks to the coordination of and his team.
With enrollment limited to ten students, it'll sell out fast. Don't wait!

2019
Wrapped up a commission this week based in part on this painting from 2019. The commission was a different aspect ratio and had some details from the area near the client's home in southern California, about half the length of the state from where I got the photo reference for this one back in 2018.

I’m using pure titanium white here (don’t come at me ha). My palette colors are from. One of my favorite pigments for creating warm glow effects like this is Indian Yellow. It’s fully transparent and mixes beautifully with other primary colors to push color temperatures warmer. #oilpainting #landscapepainting #mhpaints #pleinairpaintersofamerica

About the class: Each morning will feature a presentation, full demo, and exercises for students focusing on value & composition. Afternoons will be devoted to one-on-one instruction. Points of study will include:
Seeing as an artist: seeing shapes, value shifts, and color temperatures. We’ll look at midday skies, sunset & sunrise, and clouds in moonlight.
Planning your painting: envisioning your painting, using varied reference material, honing value and design, doing color studies
Design: Cloud-heavy compositions allow for a lot of artistic license in design, so we’ll look at different types of directional movement that give a cloudscape dynamism.
Stages of studio painting: drawing, block-in, color mixing, approaches to working a larger painting, refining texture & edges, tools for self-critique
Experimentation: exercises you can do at home to continue your growth as an artist
One-on-one instruction will be individually tailored. Students are encouraged to email several cloudscape painting examples beforehand and list some specific things they would like to work on.
Attendance fee includes a full color 40-page workshop handbook for further study.
