Through this lens, the arid deserts of Palm Springs, Joshua Tree and Sedona transform into lush, otherworldly oases. Shrubs and cacti glow brighter than anything else in the scene. Synthetic grass reveals itself instantly as dark purple/inorganic in the view finder, while healthy plants shimmer with life.
What appears muted and dry to the naked eye becomes highlighted. For me, INFRA REALISM is a search for colour and vitality in places you might least expect it to exist.

But after photographing its Mars-like deserts, Mid-Century houses, retro pools and vintage cars countless times, the place began to lose its spark. My eyes, so accustomed to its cinematic landscapes, simply switched off. Although I was still in love with the light shifting across its mountains, Palm Springs no longer felt like a muse, and so I sought to re-enchant it.
Converting a digital camera for infrared, extending the edge of the visible spectrum exponentially, completely transformed the way I saw. Through the viewfinder, I discovered a mysterious realm between reality and the surreal.

This September, Gallerysmith will present a group exhibition featuring artworks by several of our esteemed artists at Sydney Contemporary. Today we highlight photographic artist Kate Ballis.
Kate Ballis’ photographic practice is grounded in mythology and a desire to uncover the unseen; She is best known for her use of a converted spectrum camera to capture frequencies of light not visible to the human eye. Her iconic ongoing series, ‘Infra Realism’ recasts the Californian desert in a surreal palette to reveal a hidden vibrancy beyond the visible spectrum of plants and architecture. Shot in Palm Springs, the series remains one of her most recognised bodies of work.
In 2023, Ballis and life-partner Tom Blachford collaborated on a project that combined Blachford’s mastery of long exposure photography with Ballis’ quest to make seen the unseen. The resultant works which we will present at Sydney Contemporary depict individual flowers from the couple’s garden grown from bulb or seed and shot in a black box studio under UV light. Exploding with colour and movement, each work in this series transforms a single bloom into a wonderous microcosm that is reminiscent of giant constellations and far off galaxies.

The results and process by which the images are captured has captivated both artists and allowed them to explore their shared love of using photography to make the unseen, seen.
Each bloom, cut on just the right day is brought into their pitch black home studio and subjected to a large amount of ultraviolet light, specifically 365nm, invisible to both the human eye and the camera used to capture these images. The flowers absorb this powerful energy, in turn changing its frequency and re-emitting it within the visible spectrum as a faint ethereal glow of colour, almost imperceivable to the human eye. The camera, fixed on the flower uses long exposures to drink in this ghostly warmth.
Each image requires up to 100 of these exposures in order to capture the full depth and detail of each bloom, which are then stitched together to create the final image.
The results are reminiscent of galaxies far away, twinkling with stars of dust and exploding with pollen supernovas. The artworks are named after stars and galaxies rather than the botanical name of the flowers.
