To have work selected for the inaugural exhibition THE ONLY TRUE PROTEST IS BEAUTY has been a particular highlight of my career. The thoughtful curation by Dries Van Noten and Geert Bruloot brings together photography, sculpture, furniture, jewellery, fashion and other objects in unexpected conversations, all within the remarkable setting of the Palazzo Pisani Moretta in Venice.
I’m delighted to be returning to Venice in a couple of weeks to see the exhibition once more before it close on the October 4, this time with my family. Revisiting the at a more leisurely pace, catching before it closes and I’m also looking forward to a few days absorbing the unique atmosphere of La Serenissima — a city I never tire of.
The exhibition runs until October 4 and I’m not sure that Stifle(2008) and MURMUR (2026) will ever see themselves in such incredible company in again

In Kate MccGwire’s Stifle (2008), thousands of white pigeon feathers are drawn into a dense, folded sculptural form—part cocoon, part creature, part cloud. Protected inside an antique glass dome, the work feels at once devotional and unnerving: a monument to softness that seems to contain its own pressure.
The feather, so often associated with flight, freedom and fragility, becomes something unexpectedly physical here. Layer by layer, it forms a closed, almost muscular body: beautiful, vulnerable and slightly claustrophobic.
MccGwire’s work asks us to look longer at the materials we think we know. In doing so, Stifle turns the familiar into something strange—and lets quietness become charged.

Collected from farmers, gamekeepers, pigeon racers, and donations, the people I collect my feathers from go out of their way to keep them aside for me; the truth is, they would otherwise go to waste. Because my pieces use hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of feathers, it's easy to assume that they are sourced quickly and from unsavoury sources. However, collecting the right feathers for the right piece can take years.
