Ok so I'm hearing LOT'S of misunderstanding around how preferential voting works. It's vital that everyone understands how this system works because these misconceptions can impact who people choose to vote for.

I've heard someone say "I think it's really unfair that if the person you vote for doesn't get in, then they just give your vote to whoever they preference". This is *not* how our voting system works! As candidates, or parties, we don't pass your vote on to anyone else.

When you hear people ask us about a candidate's preferences, they are referring to the 'How To Vote' cards that each party or independent puts out just before the election. This is simply a suggestion for voters to follow, based on who we think most aligns with our values or who does not. But ultimately, who you preference on your ballot is totally up to you! And if your first preference doesn't get in, your vote will flow on to your second preference, and so on.
