“If the war were to end” read the always enigmatic and concise show notes. And the message was palpable.
A companion collection to AW25’s “To Hell With War,” the collection exudes the joy of such a future. It was in its way, deeply political, but not in a didactic, or worse the facile way that far too many designers and labels employ when engaging with such ideas. Rei Kawakubo couldn’t be facile if se tried.
Kawakubo is one of less than a handful of truly important and visionary designers working today. And always has been. To see her (almost) abandon her beloved black, was moving. With its colorful frock coats, pants, tunics, its guaracheros, the lightness of the fabric, swaying gorgeously as the models swept past, the palate-bright and intense at times and pastel and soft at others-and its incredible soundtrack, it truly felt like the antidote to the alienation and anxiety that so many of us feel everyday. To the pain and despair that those suffering as bombs fall-it isn’t going to solve the material reality that our brothers and sisters trapped in war zones. But that’s not its job. The collection reminds us that change is possible. That suffering can be alleviated. Now it’s up to all of us to find ways to embody and realize her imagined possible future. And JOY is the key.
What a brilliant collection.
“I can’t get you out of my head…”
And I don’t want to!

“I believe in the positiveness and the value that can be born from the damaging of perfect things,” Rei Kawakubo from the seasons show notes.
As enigmatic as the description is it holds true. And for me especially, in the jute pieces. This pair of pants are no exception, with the “damage” seeming to be the pink dye that the bottom of the legs have appear to be dipped in. On the surface it reads as incomplete, or inadequately dyed, but that’s what makes them so beautiful. I also can’t help but see the most oblique reference to Buffalo Gals era Westwood. What a special collection.
These pants are one of my favorites this season. But all the jute pieces, from boots to pants, to skirts, vests and blazers, they are all incredible.

There’s nothing more special (and important) to me at KASURI than when a beautiful human (and by beautiful I’m not speaking of physical beauty though often they overlap) comes in and just understands. Or sometimes even, they don’t fully understand but they surrender to being open. And they play. And they spend time looking at, touching, feeling, even smelling; and then they dress up.
They laugh, makes “Oohs” and all sorts of spontaneous expressions and they look at themselves intensely. They make their mirror face ( which every human has and is as unique as a fingerprint) and feel what it means to wear something that speaks to them.
To watch those discussions between a piece of clothing and a beautiful human in the mirror, feeling what clothes can mean and do, it’s gorgous.
Ahh, and then to watch them fall in love. Yes-with a piece of clothing- but really with how wearing that special piece makes them think, feel and move, through the world.

Well I’m happy to report I was able to experience this process many times today, but especially I was able to go on such an adventure with who was a joy to behold. With the assistance of KASURI’s own they really went in deep-with some of this season’s strongest pieces from Comme des Garçons and Issey Miyake. Thank you for not just the adventure, but for being such a brilliant delight and for sharing your warmth, compassion, intelligence and beauty as well.

I fell in love watching you fall in love and love is the message!

“It’s beautiful when clothes make you want to dance…”
It truly is. And clothes have always meant that. For style, for pragmatism, for ease of movement or for restricting movement. Clothes and dancing are irrevocably linked. And when, in the middle of trying on some beautiful IM Men pieces, the compulsion to dance overcame he felt so free in the space that he danced his wee heart out. More than I captured even.
“The way it feels against my skin as I move in it, it makes me want to keep moving, in unlikely ways, through dance.”

The sentiment is a powerful one, and Daniel isn’t the first dancer to find inspiration in the work of Issey Miyake. But more on that later.

And that’s a good day.

We look forward to seeing you!
What a brilliant message to wake up to “hey I just wanted to share that the story is now live…” from the evening before. But I never post anything important (if I can help it) on Sunday. The algorithm blah, blah, blah. So here we are!
Truly, thank you and for this lovely article. It means so much to have someone who I cherish and admire ( Kristen is someone with enough Anna Piaggi NRG to get my endorphins flowing anytime I encounter her) ask to do a piece on us. And it’s a lovely one. I wanted to talk for hours, days, but Kristen is amongst many things, a pro, and has been watching us for a time, and new exactly what she wanted to communicate. Thank you for seeing KASURI, for understanding why it’s so special, why it draws so many incredible people in, from the revered to the obscure, and creates a space where they can all come together, dress up, share ideas, cross pollinate and become the garden of bizarre and enchanting flowers, emitting strange and seductive perfumes, that bloom and blossom over and over again, never looking the same, but ALWAYS beautiful and perverse. Baudelaire, eat your heart out.
