Please meet our newest intake, a lovable 4-month-old Olde English Bulldog. This little man was surrendered to us due to urinary and fecal incontinence, and we suspect Spina Bifida, a congenital condition affecting spinal development.
Spina Bifida occurs when a puppy’s vertebrae don’t fully form around the spinal cord during gestation. This can interfere with the nerves that control bladder and bowel function, and in some instances the hind limbs, which is why some dogs experience weakness and incontinence. While lifelong management is often required, many dogs with this diagnosis lead rich, happy lives, especially with early intervention, a tailored vet plan, and the right supportive tools.
We will be seeing our vet soon to confirm his diagnosis, and we’ll share updates every step of the way — including his name!

She does need sedation for the scan, as she must remain completely still. Sedation in bulldogs carries a higher level of risk compared to non-brachycephalic breeds, but we’re confident she’s in excellent hands.

Our handsome sanctuary senior, Biggie, is heading in for surgery tomorrow for a dental and a lump removal on his eyelid.
Anyone who’s met Biggie knows him for that million-dollar smile — and we can’t wait to see it shining again soon. 🥹✨
While these are fairly routine procedures, they come with added risk for senior, brachycephalic (flat-faced) dogs like Biggie. He’s in excellent hands with our clinic and will be surrounded by love every step of the way.

I wanted to check in and let you know how I’m doing after my tail surgery. Healing hasn’t been easy—there have been some bumps along the way—but my new antibiotics are finally starting to do their job. The infection is improving, and my doctors say I’m slowly but surely heading in the right direction.
It will take some time before I’m fully healed, but every day I feel just a little bit better. I’m so grateful for all the love and kind words you’ve sent my way. Knowing that so many people are rooting for me makes this journey a lot less scary. ❤️ Live, Calvin 🐾

Many of you have asked about his tail surgery and complications, so here’s an update. Calvin arrived with a severely infected corkscrew tail pocket. Without prior vet care, the bacteria had developed into a resistant “superbug,” making oral antibiotics ineffective. Surgery to remove the tail was the only option.
Corkscrew tails twist inward, trapping debris and bacteria. While some can be managed with daily cleaning, deeply infected ones often require amputation. Calvin’s surgery went well, but healing has been slow due to the stubborn bacteria. His wound has reopened a few times, so he’s now on daily antibiotic injections and careful wound care.
Huge thanks to Dr. Alison Sutton and the team, who have gone above and beyond for Calvin. He’s in excellent hands, and we’re hopeful he’ll be fully healed soon. ❤️🐾 #englishbulldogrescueofontario #ebro #englishbulldog #calvin
