The Renshaws is thrilled to announce the representation of Sydney-based artist Karen Black.

Black works across painting, ceramics and sculpture to explore the body as a site of both trauma and resilience. Her practice operates in the tension between abstraction and figuration; and myth and autobiography. For Black, painting is not mere representation but embodied thinking: a cyclical, recursive process of emotional archaeology in which paint is laid down, scraped back and softened until what remains is less an image than an accumulation of energies. Rooted in a politics of care and attention to the historically invisible, her work offers a space of radical empathy, where softness becomes a form of resistance.

The Renshaws are also enormously grateful to Sutton Gallery, whose 12 years of dedicated support have been foundational to Karen’s practice. That relationship continues, and we look forward to working alongside them in support of Karen’s career.

I’m feeling incredibly grateful to be a finalist in the Wynne and Sulman prizes and to be hanging with so many friends and so many cracking works.

This one for the Wynne is one of the largest paintings I’ve ever made. Images are details within the large work that I enjoyed painting. The first detail is a self portrait with pet cockatiel 😊

Growing up in the bush, I developed a deep connection to the landscape, especially mountains, and I’ve made many works over the years about their presence and energy.

My late father often photographed them with his box brownie camera shaping how I see and remember place. In this work I draw on the zen phrase ‘body like a mountain’ reflecting stability, vastness and presence through a unity with nature.

Formed over eons, Australian mountains hold a quiet endurance and ancient energy. I allowed the composition to float, layering oil sticks, to suggest the shared energy of body and land moving together across time.
Congratulations to Karen Black, selected as a finalist in both the Wynne Prize and Sulman Prize 2026 at the.

The works will be on view at the Art Gallery of NSW on Saturday, 9th May 2026.
In 2020 I became fascinated with creating unique frames for my works and then extending the painting across them, letting the surface spill over the edges.

It transformed each work into a sculptural form-the folds, creases and curves of these handmade frames opened up new possibilities for the composition letting the paint push into corners, sliding the brush through a deep curve or racing around the edge to touch the wall.

I’m at it again and enjoying the process so much.
Here’s one from my solo show ITS NOT REAL which opened just as COVID closed us down. Seemed like an accidentally apt title for the show at the time.

I’ve finally had a moment to reflect on this giant sculpture that I made for a solo show in 2024 and celebrate her magic. She was ‘untitled’ at the time. Likely because it nearly broke me making her and my body is still feeling the pain.

Here are some pics from the process and now that she is gone, a possible title for her. (I saved some bits for further development one day).

Some quite hilarious images of her street side being painted with pigment and water sprays outside the front of my studio building.

Could not have made this without my awesome friend and trusted studio assistant for many years, Hal Witney who was turning up after his day job to get her finished on time. Also a special thanks to for all of his mentoring on this project and allowing me to make a huge mess in and around his ground floor studio. As well as saving her from falling over on a couple of occasions.

It’s always nice to see where paintings live and hopefully bring joy to a home. This beautiful bedroom in Middle Park designed by is home to a work that seems to sit very comfortably into David Flack’s genius palette of colour and materials.

These ceramics were acquired by NGV in 2016 from my solo show, ‘Crown, legs, arms’. Both works were also curated into the exhibition ‘Shut up and paint’ coinciding with the major NGV exhibition ‘David Hockney: Current’ in 2016/17.
