Side story- It was about 2 million degrees (est) in my apartment / the film set for the Boudoir Series Part II in Italy during a heat wave. Annachiara, here, the other muses, the entire crew, and myself were all swimming in our own “glow”, eating popsicles and taking hits off the fan between takes.
Still, she kept her cool.
It’s not about vanity, but to show up as the subject while also improving as a photographer. Greatly. And I can’t stress that enough.
Your unique style will naturally unfold. Your taste will become more refined. You’ll become more discerning about what you present to your clients. And yes, of course, you’ll document yourself for all the important reasons that you preach to your clients.
It doesn’t have to be a full production. In fact, to set yourself up for success, give yourself some simple parameters to follow. They don’t have to be the same as mine.
For me, I know I prefer the undone aesthetic. I like a dirty frame, I like something that feels like a stolen glance as opposed to a curated image.
So I give myself a limit of a 2 minute set up, a 10 minute shoot, and a 10 minute maximum edit. I don’t “get myself ready”— it is what it is.
This works for me. It keeps the pressure down as well as the expectations. Most importantly, it makes it practical for me to consistently fire off a few frames on a regular basis.
Self portraits can be your catalyst for your next style evolution. They can change your perspective of what you want to offer your clients. They can be a personal visual journal of sorts. And they will inevitably advance your skill set as a photographer.

You need to feel it all— the butterflies, the understanding and verbalizing of what it is you want, the release of control, the pins and needles of waiting to see your images, the emotions of seeing yourself as art, the process of selecting your favorites.

For this photo session, Mimi wanted some emotive movement, a bold display of her strength, and a peek into her vulnerable side. The variety and magnitude of images we created together spoke volumes of what happens when you ask the right questions and fully understand the assignment while providing a comfortable and supportive atmosphere.
Mimi showed up and trusted the process. She was strong and soft and embraced her many facets that I was ushering to the surface to capture. We crushed this photo experience. Then we crushed a big lunch immediately after.
(Btw it must be mentioned that after her mentorship program in Milan she went straight to Poland where she took home a GOLD and BRONZE medal in the WORLD BENCHPRESSING CHAMPIONSHIPS.?!! She now holds FIVE world titles. 🤯 Hello legend!)

My sweet friend and I packed up her little car and road-tripped to the “heel of the boot” in Southern Italy for some creative play and project work.
We stayed in a Trullo (the white structure you see in the first few images) which is a limestone “cone” dwelling that originated in the 17th century as field shelters or laborer dwellings. The countryside of Puglia is full of them.
Each morning we woke before sunrise to get as many shots in before it rained, then we spent the rest of the time eating and drinking and bundled up in our trullo with movie, popcorn, and special appearance from a scorpion.
I’m so happy with what we made together, memories included, and can’t wait to share the full project with y’all someday soonish. Xx

This is a fun little creative exercise I do when I’m sitting on a train or plane…going through my camera roll to pair up photos that feel good together.
1- photographed on XT4 in a hotel room in Dublin, edited with my Grain Goddess preset “alright, alright”
2- airplane window view somewhere over the Amalfi Coast. When flying back to the US, I always sit in an aisle seat because the claustrophobia tends to set in around hour 5. But when I take quick trips from Italy to somewhere else in Europe, I can sit in a window seat and you’d think it was my very first time on a plane- I take photos out the window the whole time. It’s so magical just above the clouds. It makes me feel small, inspired, and childlike. 🖤 Shot on iPhone, edited with Grain Goddess “basement behavior” layered with “dare ya”
3- Lake Como mist from one of my favorite spots on a really special day, again feeling small, inspired, and childlike. Shot on Fuji XT4, edited on iPhone.
4- You’ll never find me without my incense. I start my day with it, I end my day with it, I travel with it, I gift it,
I watch it twist and wind into mystical little curls in the air. It calms me and grounds me. Shot on iPhone.
5- photographed on Fujifilm GFX100 in Dublin in a whirrrr of creation— dust flying everywhere, lace over my camera, standing on furniture and lying on the floor. I think I blacked out while taking these— but turns out I get my favorite stuff when that happens. 😂 Edited with my grain goddess presets in “bright & airy” layered with “alright, alright”.
