The KAOEF interns recently celebrated America’s Semiquincentennial and Independence Day by attending a fireworks display at George Washington’s Mount Vernon. They also participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at President Washington’s tomb, made possible through the generous donation of tickets from alumnus and partner at Cooley LLP Law FirmRob McDowell (Alpha Phi–Duke ‘83).

The interns also toured the U.S. Capitol with alumnus Ross Elston (Alpha Upsilon–Mississippi ‘20), a Floor Assistant in the Office of the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, including a special visit to the House floor. The KAOEF Internship Program is made possible through grant support from the KAOEF.

The KAOEF interns had a busy weekend as they wrapped up their first month in Washington, D.C., serving as production volunteers for the 2026 Miss District of Columbia Scholarship Pageant. Lisa Spies, Executive Director of the Miss DC Pageant, is a longtime KAOEF internship host through her work as President of The LS Group, a political and nonprofit fundraising and development firm.

Following their work at the pageant, the five interns enjoyed an evening of brotherhood at Magnolia Lodge No. 53, F.&A.M.'s annual Table Lodge. Magnolia Lodge is a Washington, D.C.-based Masonic organization comprised entirely of KA brothers. The interns were invited to join the members for dinner, and one of our interns, Gavin Adams (Zeta Alpha–Boulder '23), is pictured with Magnolia Lodge members Nate Wingfield (Alpha Omicron–Arkansas '20), Dustin James (Delta Tau–Francis Marion '10), and Matthew Brownlee (Beta Eta–Oklahoma '11), Master of Magnolia Lodge.

Kappa Alpha Order is mourning the sudden passing yesterday of Mayor Frank Friedman. KA is headquartered in Lexington, Virginia, home to our National Administrative Office at Mulberry Hill. Among many other public roles, Mayor Friedman has served as Lexington’s Mayor since 2016. He has been a friend to KA and many members of the National Staff for quite some time. A proud alumnus of The Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity from Hampden-Sydney College, Mayor Friedman has spoken annually at the Order’s Emerging Leaders Academy (pictured) about the importance of brotherhood, values, and shared history. He was always ready to support or champion anything Lexington related, including dedicating May 2, 2025, as “Lexington Fraternity Triad Day” (pictured), during a joint meeting of KA’s Executive Council, and the national boards of Alpha Tau Omega National Fraternity and Sigma Nu Fraternity, all three fraternities having been founded in Lexington, at either Washington and Lee University or Virginia Military Institute.

Today marks the first day of sadness and grieving—but also for KAs and all around us, remembering that there IS a light that casts these shadows. When we turn our eyes heavenward, we can remember the joy, friendship, and positivity that Mayor Friedman embodied to everyone he met. Join KAs in praying for comfort and sympathy for his wife Melissa, children, family, friends, and all those who knew Frank Friedman.
For nearly a decade, the brothers of Zeta Phi Chapter at High Point University have partnered with The Independence Fund to support wounded Veterans, helping inspire more than $1.4 million in fundraising efforts by KA chapters nationwide since 2016. Following a record year in which the chapter raised more than $150,000, the brothers expanded their support to include The Independence Fund's Family Program.

Their contribution helped fund a Family Retreat that sent four Veteran families on a fully accessible Disney Cruise, providing an opportunity for rest, connection, and time together. Through their continued partnership with The Independence Fund, the brothers of Zeta Phi Chapter remain committed to supporting wounded Veterans and their families.
