An 8th grader at Kamehameha Kapālama, Ileina first discovered her love for math in 3rd grade when she realized the excitement of turning something that once seemed impossible into something she could solve mentally. What fascinated her most was the unity within mathematics — different methods, same solution.
Her mathematical journey accelerated after entering Kamehameha in 4th grade, where she scored in the 99th percentile on the NWEA assessment. But beyond the achievements, Ileina learned one of her most important lessons through humility. After confidently attempting an Algebra 2 worksheet at UAchieve in 5th grade and getting every answer wrong, she gained a deeper understanding of growth, resilience, and empathy. Today, she’s come full circle — now serving as a tutor at the very same program.
Inspired by her 8th grade huakaʻi and Kaʻaumauloa elective, Ileina hopes to one day return home to Hawaiʻi as an environmental engineer — not only advocating for the ʻāina, but helping create real change for it.
Her message to students struggling with math: “Even the world’s smartest mathematicians faced problems they couldn’t solve. Instead of giving up, they adapted. Sometimes we don’t dislike something — we just haven’t understood it deeply enough yet.”

The journey started in December 2025 upon completion of his Media Technology and Communications class where he served as an anchor for Puka Mai Ka Lā. Recognizing his interest and background in doing a clothing line aligned with this project, reached out to Troy.
Over the next few months, he helped to coordinate and plan the media assets, captured footage during our visit to Fighting Eel, interviewed Taavi, crafted social media posts, and answered your comments all while maintaining his other 6 classes. Bringing his own experience with social media and e-commerce, Troy created and posted the graphic that kicked off this whole journey.
But even with the best laid plans, hitches can occur... Kona Lows, AP Exams, Track Meets and LIFE in general taught Troy flexibility, adaptability and perseverance. He more than passed this class...he takes with him valuable, real world skills as he embarks on his next adventure.
AND in about a week Troy will be graduating with Honors and plans to seek a degree in Marketing. E hoʻomaikaʻi!
