Ten senators - thanks to YOUR urging - took a hard look at nominee Riley Smith, and voted against his nomination. Two of them also opposed the nomination of Denise Iseri-Matsubara (mahalo and )
None of the Senators from Hawaiʻi Island were brave enough to stand up to the "old boy" network behind Riley Smith - including Governor Josh Green's PRP/Carpenters Union advisors - with all legislators voting in support other than -- who decided to take a vacation (🤦♀️) on the last day of session, when some of the most significant measures of the year were receiving their final votes.
Water, Land, Culture and the Arts Committee Chair also voted in favor of these nominees would somehow save him a leadership position in the Senate.... This is how deep the influence goes 🤯!
Stay tuned as we must now keep an even closer eye on the Land Board and Land Use Commission, both dominated by industry interests, as they render decisions and grant approvals from everything from the Space Force Lease for Haleakalā, to land exchanges in furtherance of military live fire training, to commercial aquarium collection, to the urbanization of agricultural, rural, and conservation district lands being rapidly bought up by tech bro billionaires from around the world.

TOMORROW, May 8, twenty-five Hawaiʻi Senators will cast their votes on GM692 and GM636, nominating Riley Smith and Denise Iseri-Matsubara to the Land Board (see previous posts FMI).
This would give developers and corporate representatives a significant majority on the board tasked with overseeing our public (and stolen Hawaiian) lands and resources. The Land Use Commission is already suffering from the same fate.
Riley Smith is particularly dangerous as a current Board member who has consistently favored military and corporate convenience over the public trust, cultural practices, and our environmental protection laws - forcing Native Hawaiians and community members to sue time and again, just to uphold our rights.

This #MMIWG Day, we look to the resistance fighters of Palestine who remind us to resist the normalization of occupation at every turn.
We refuse to normalize the murder, trafficking, and disappearance of Native women and girls. We refuse to normalize the idea that nothing can be done. We refuse to ignore the fact that there are individuals at every level of society who can and will be held accountable.
Missing and murdered Native women and girls is a crisis rooted in colonization. Since contact in 1778, this has been an issue, and since at least 2022, the State of Hawaiʻi has been on notice. Still, little has been done by the government to meet the recommendations made by its own entities in the report, to address material conditions plaguing Native Hawaiians, and to reduce any systemic barriers that uphold the MMNHWG crisis.
And still, we remain steadfast in our fight for justice. Survivors, feminist organizers, and impacted family members continue to provide care, resources, and further the fight. Because #NoMoreStolenSisters is not a pipe dream; it can and will be our reality.
Today on MMIWG Day, we stand in honor of our missing and murdered Native Hawaiian women & girls.
These are not just statistics.
These are our sisters.
Our daughters.
Our mothers.
Our aunties.
Our poʻe.
For too long, Kānaka Maoli women and girls have faced disproportionate violence, trafficking, disappearance, and systemic neglect. Families continue to search for answers while our communities continue to carry grief, fear, and intergenerational trauma.
We must continue to speak their names, protect our wāhine, uplift survivors, and demand accountability, action, and systemic change. Silence cannot continue while our people are disappearing.
May we move with courage, aloha, and unwavering commitment to protecting our lāhui. ✊🏽

A pillar in our community is an understatement, she was the roots and foundation for many, especially for me when I was truly finding my identity, history and culture as a Kānaka Maoli and Hawaiian of Hawai’i.
My Kumu/Aunty A’ia’i was an amazing Wāhine koa and did a lot for us Kānaka and Hawaiians in so many ways…she taught me and many others Oli, showed us our connection to our kūpuna/ancestors and showed us the ways to mālama Nā iwi kūpuna, amongst many other things.
My pu’uwai is sore knowing such an amazing woman has gone to pō last night at her home under the Māhealani mahina and left our earth physically, as there was so much more knowledge to learn from her and so much love for us to give to her, as we’ll continue to do so…but we can’t be selfish, as she’s also not in pain anymore, because she was going through a lot these past years, especially within the last few months.
You’ll be missed by many, but I know that you’ll always be around, because you’ve shown me that this life we live is only temporary, but the journey continues afterwards.
Love you Kumu, appreciate you and all you’ve done and all that you’ll continue to do for all of us here…a hui hou, until we meet again and may Akua guide you into the next life or Allah take you to jannah as you deserve, as you became Muslim within the couple years and following the prophet Muhammad like my braddah
