Today is the 8th — the ennichi of Yakushi Nyorai, the Medicine Buddha.
The raised right hand forms the Semui-in —
a quiet gesture that whispers, “Do not be afraid.”
In the left hand rests the medicine jar,
filled with sacred remedies
for the illnesses of both body and mind.
May this quiet gaze
reach those who carry pain within them.

煤と塵に覆われた弁才天様
まず彩色層を安定させることから始める。
煤や埃を除去し、クリーニングていく…。
残念ながら今修復において、造像当初の彩色を垣間見ることは叶わなかった。
下地からは浮き上がり、わずかな振動でも層が崩れかねない。
浮き上がった彩色をすこしずつ天然樹脂を注入しながら押さえていく。
剥落止め——それは修復の中でも、最も緊張を要する工程のひとつだ。
次に、持物の復元。
八本の腕のうち、一臂、そして複数の持物が亡失していた。
同時代の近い作例を参考に形状を探り、
檜材で彫刻し、漆箔を施して古色をつける。
新しく補った部分が御像に溶け込むよう、
尚且つ、令和の新補と視認できるように…。
そして、御像の頭部に目を向けた時。
そこに、宇賀神様がいた。
他の像とは異なり、とぐろを巻かず、
双髻を束ねるように蛇身が巡り、
後頭部より一筋に垂下する。
調査に入られた先生方も、希少な例とおっしゃった。
宇賀弁才天として、この地に伝えられてきたお姿。
その象徴が、ひそやかに宿っていた。

The restoration of Benzaiten begins with stabilization.
The soot is carefully removed, the pigment layers cleaned.
Yet even after cleaning, it was impossible to glimpse
the original coloring as it was when first created.
The pigment layers had lifted from the surface —
a single vibration could cause them to crumble.
Each raised section is gently pressed back, layer by layer.
Consolidation — one of the most tension-filled steps in any restoration.
Next, the reconstruction of the sacred implements.
One arm, along with several attributes, had been lost entirely.
Referencing comparable works from the same period,
each piece is carved in hinoki, finished with lacquer and gold leaf,
then given an antique patina.
The additions must blend into the original —
yet remain identifiable as work of the Reiwa era.
Then, turning to the head of the figure —
Ugajin was there.
Unlike the other figures, this one does not coil.
Instead, the serpent body winds around the bound hair,
descending in a single line from the back of the head.
The scholars who examined the work confirmed:
no other known example exists.
This is the form in which Uga-Benzaiten
has been passed down at this place.
That symbol rested quietly within the figure,
waiting to be seen.

この地は、龍華寺としてはじまり、
水の霊性とともに法灯を守り伝えてきた聖域。
軽々しく語り尽くせぬ時間が、
静かに幾層にも折り重なっています。
虹始見。
水の気、静かに満ちゆくこの時節。
4月18日より20日までの三日間、
「龍王講春大祭」が執り行われます。
（※18日は法話はなく仏誕会となります）
10時半より 大祈祷。
龍神様とのご縁を結ぶ、年に一度の法縁です。
お近くにお越しの際は、どうぞお参りください。
『今昔物語』をはじめ、数多の伝承にその面影をたずね、
お姿を造顕いたしました。
その御人柄の気配が、静かに伝わりますようにと念じつつ……。
九年前の今日、
最後の仕上げに向き合ったあの張り詰めた緊張が、
ふいに立ち現れるように思い出されました。

A dragon king and dragon princess once descended to Kaikuiike Pond.
Drawn into the sutras of Myōtatsu Shōnin,
they found in the dharma a light they had not known before,
and pledged to shield his followers from the harms of wind and water.
That vow rose with them as they returned to the sky as dragons —
and in time, gave this place its name: Zenpōji.
This ground began as Ryūge-ji,
a sacred site that has held the flame of the dharma
alongside the spirit of water, through more centuries than words can hold.

A once-a-year gathering to form a bond with the dragon deity.
All are welcome to visit and offer prayers.
Tracing his likeness through the Konjaku Monogatari and many other records,
we carved this portrait in the hope that something of his presence might come through.
And today, nine years on —
the quiet tension of those final hours
returns, as if suddenly meeting me again.

一番古いと思われる宇賀神様。
通常、とぐろを巻く蛇身は一木から彫り出される。
しかしこの宇賀神様は違った。
C型に顕された蛇身をつなぎ合わせてとぐろを形成している。
その中心に、空洞が生まれる。
そして霊亀。
運び出す工程で、ふと思い立った。
宇賀神様のとぐろの空洞に、霊亀の背に乗る宝珠を合わせてみるとぴたりと合致した。
元は一具だったのか。
それとも偶然なのか。
さらに、煤けた御像をクリーニングすると、瞼の中には水晶の玉眼が嵌入されていた。
うるおいを湛えたその眼が、静かにこちらを見つめていた。
畏怖とも呼べる感情に包まれる・・・。
お大師様、そして天皇家にもゆかりの深いこの地。
その歴史の深みの中でのみ生まれ得た、
特別な御姿なのかもしれない。
問いは、今も静かに残っている。

Among the Ugajin figures housed within the cabinet,
this one is believed to be the oldest.
Normally, the coiled serpent body is carved from a single piece of wood.
But this figure was different.
The serpent body, shaped in C-forms, was assembled in sections to form the coil.
At its center — a hollow space.
And a sacred tortoise.
During the process of removal, a thought arose.
I placed the jewel resting on the tortoise's back
into the hollow of Ugajin's coil.
— It fit perfectly.
Were they once a single set?
Or merely coincidence?
Then, as the soot-darkened figure was cleaned,
crystal eyes — gyokugan — were revealed within the eyelids.
Moist. Still. Watching quietly.
Wrapped in something close to awe,
I continued to work.
This is Shinsenen — deeply connected to Kobo Daishi,
and to the imperial family itself.
Perhaps this figure could only have been born
from within the depths of this singular place.
The question rests here, quietly, still unanswered.

貪・瞋・痴の三毒をはじめ、人が人生を歩む中で出会う様々な業障を浄化し、何者にも支配されない心の安堵と確信を己が身の中に構築する。
請雨、止雨の本尊としてもお祀りされてきた孔雀明王様は、からだに、ことばに、こころにうるおいが行渡る様に...と。
そして、その彩り鮮やかな羽が周りを豊かなものに導いてくださいます。
