Parenting hills we will die on:

We’re not raising a kid who’s entertained every second of the day. Rosie gets to be bored, hear “no,” play by herself, and get filthy doing it, and we really believe she’s going to be better for it.

Books are a huge part of our home — they’re in every room, they’re part of our bedtime, and reading together is one of our favorite parts of the day. We want her to grow up surrounded by stories. But we’re also not precious about screen time. A movie day on the couch with popcorn is one of life’s great joys, and we’re not going to pretend otherwise.
Routines matter to us. Rosie thrives when she knows what to expect, and honestly, so do we. But routines aren’t rules carved in stone, they’re just framework. Some days nap gets pushed, dinner is late, plans get scrapped because she needs something different that day. Having structure and being willing to pivot aren’t opposites. They’re both part of how our family works.

Will some of this change as she gets older? Absolutely. One activity a season might turn into two when she’s five and obsessed with something. Screen time rules will shift. The way we hold the line on “no” will look different at six than it does at two. Being a parent means staying flexible and paying attention to the kid in front of you, not the rules you made before you had one.

But for right now, for our family, this is what’s working. What are your hills?
Last night, Veronica and I got to spend the evening at the Night at the Pier event with and, and a whole host of amazing people and honestly I woke up this morning still holding onto the feeling of it.

There’s something about being in a room full of people who just get it that makes me want to cry in the best possible way. It reminds me why living openly and unapologetically as a queer woman, as a queer family, will never stop mattering. There is still so much more to do, and nights like this make me want to do all of it.

To Family Equality, thank you feels small but it’s the most sincere thing I have. The work you do, the people you bring together, the mission you show up for over and over again, it is so deeply felt. You always create something that feels less like an event and more like a reminder of what we’re all here for.

And for me personally, evenings like this quiet something in me and light something up at the same time. They bring me back to the reason I do what I do every single day. Because our family is just a family. Your family. Any family. We love each other, we’re building something together, and we deserve to be seen that way.

So grateful for last night. So grateful for this community. 🏳️‍🌈
But when does the healthy part come in…?
yesterday I found myself thinking a lot about what it means to be a mom, what motherhood means to the world, and how we are viewed as mothers.

and I found myself wanting to scream from the rooftops that you are only here because a woman sacrificed her body and her health, and potentially her own life, to bring you into this world. every single person on this planet exists because of that sacrifice.

so on the day after mother’s day, I think it’s more than worthwhile to remind ourselves of that, and to remind ourselves that it truly takes a community and it takes real systems in place to support mothers, now more than ever.

and when I say systems, I mean paid maternity leave that is actually more than the bare minimum, because a few weeks is not enough time to heal a body that just did something extraordinary. I mean lactation support that is accessible and judgment free. I mean childcare assistance that doesn’t cost more than a second mortgage. I mean postnatal care that comes to you, in your home, in those early weeks when leaving the house feels impossible. and I mean parental leave for the other parent that is not just offered on paper but is expected and required for them to actually take, because the mental and physical load of early motherhood was never meant to be carried alone.

the village is not a luxury, it is a necessity. and until we start treating it like one, we are failing mothers, and we are failing everyone who came here because of them.

🫧 to every mom out there, you are seen, you matter, and not just on one sunday in may.

They want to compare blue states with 1-2 seats… that literally cannot be gerrymandered, lol, to Florida, Texas, Tennessee, Alabama, Louisiana, and South Carolina.

That’s 27 seats versus 95.

One is states that just vote blue. The other is a White House-backed, mid-decade power grab enabled by a Supreme Court ruling that gutted the Voting Rights Act 9 days earlier.

Not the same thing. Not even close.

How do we celebrate Mother’s Day as a two-mom family? The same way we do everything else, together and equally.

We’ve been doing it this way since we started dating, through wedding planning, the beginning of our marriage, fertility treatments, and obviously that was always going to carry into parenthood too.

We don’t split it up. Neither of us takes Father’s Day or picks a different day to celebrate, although if that’s what works for you and your family, that is completely perfect. I have been looking forward to celebrating being a mother with another mother since I even started thinking about getting pregnant, so getting to celebrate each other tomorrow is always a gift.

Tomorrow we’re actually hosting a few of our friends who also have kids, so we can celebrate the other mothers in our lives too. The ones who help us survive this absolutely insane chapter with support, love, and a lot of humor.

Bereaved Mother’s Day is observed the Sunday before Mother’s Day, but many people have never heard of it. Today honors mothers who have lost children at any stage: miscarriage, stillbirth, infancy, childhood, or beyond.

In a culture that centers very visible motherhood, grief can become almost entirely invisible. I’d like to emphasize that this loss does not take away anyone’s identity as a mother/parent.

Up to 1 in 4 pregnancies end in loss in the U.S., and stillbirth affects about 1 in 160 births. Yet, bereavement support is often very limited, inconsistent, or missing entirely.

Today, we hold space for the mothers who carry both love and loss. If you know someone navigating this, a simple “I’m thinking of you” can mean more than you realize.

“Controversial” ways we’re raising our child, which honestly shouldn’t be controversial at all.

We’re teaching her kindness before competition, protecting the planet over protecting billionaires, letting her grow without outdated gender boxes, and waiting until she’s old enough to understand history and mythology before introducing religion. She’s learning that tolerance is a strength, but hate and bigotry should never be tolerated. That love is what makes a family and families come all shapes and sizes.

And we’re clear: anyone who treats a politician like a messiah is to be avoided at all costs.

None of this is radical, it’s just raising a thoughtful, healthy human in a world that needs more of them.
