At first, he didn’t understand why leash greetings were such a problem. Then I realized… that’s actually the majority mindset.
And now I wonder — if people truly understood the collateral damage that can come from leash greetings, would they still feel so entitled to touch every dog they see?
Maybe. Maybe not.
But maybe if we practiced more impulse control around the things we want, our dogs would too.
Why are leash greetings such a problem?
Because leash greetings are one of the fastest ways to make your dog stop trusting your guidance.
Dogs learn quickly when they’re trapped in vulnerable situations with no real option to leave. A leash removes freedom of movement, natural body language, and escape routes. Even “friendly” greetings can create tension, frustration, over-arousal, reactivity, or conflict.
And when owners repeatedly force interactions just because they want them, dogs start learning:
“My handler won’t advocate for me.”
Not every dog wants to say hi.
Not every dog should say hi.
And neutrality is far more valuable than forced sociability.
A dog that can exist calmly around people and dogs without needing interaction is far more stable than a dog that expects access to everyone it sees.

yes a lot times the dog behavior is a you problem but you’re also the solution and just remember mistakes are all part of the learning process so forgive yourself for not knowing what your dog trainer or time is teaching 🖤

Dogs were originally designed to do a job how they handle novelty was all hardwired into their stress response to fit their purpose in their job. Novelty triggers a neorological rewarding response that dumps a bunch of endorphins, heart races, muscles tense and they act on their “iD.” The context is up to us.
If we can control the environment at an early age, we can equipped them with appropriate tools on how to act/associate this endorphin and dopamine dump.
If we don’t, the triggered responses are reinforced with their own rewards and eventually the stress becomes insatiable requiring more and more stimulus in a desperate attempt to fulfill a void.
Your dog is stressed. This stress was necessary for your dog to be great at their job - but because we fired dogs from that job they’re not learning how to deal with stress in an healthy way. The association of their experiences is up to us!
