Our apartment is all about vignettes of our favorite objects - captured this one of a console owned by Niall Smith, acquired by us through which we loaded with books, glass, ceramics and begonias (a specific and recurring theme)
These begonias are planted in an eglomise planter that tempted me with and peeking through the foliage is a portrait by Jeffery purchased 20 years ago.
The McCarty kingfisher is a prized possession of his - and I’ve had the Grand Tour copy of Spinario since I was little (an homage to my godparents’ family collection of Grand Tour copies which were much, much larger that I was always obsessed with).
reupholstered the club chair for me with a blue velvet and remnants of a tapestry

What happens when you only bought two rolls of Tom of Finland wallpaper from at a museum gift shop years ago and you need more? You marry it with another favorite paper from designed by
& that’s exactly what we did - I obsessively cut up strips of the panels at a smaller scale to work out what was actually possible, sketched all over our walls in pencil, took a video describing in detail what I wanted, and flew to London, leaving all in the expert hands of

The red metallic curtains - a fabric found and knew I would love - is trimmed with a Greek key tape from the garment district. If you look closely you can see a birthday gift from - two porcelain ‘hunks’ relaxing on the curtain rod - both admiring and being admired by their Tom of Finland friends.

The Victorian jeweled lantern came from a favorite store in Hudson where I have admired it for maybe 10 years and finally brought it home. It originally hung above a seance table in Lily Dale, New York

And of course every room - no matter the size - needs a garden seat.

So may great connections in the May issue of - ‘House of Dreams’ where writes about one of my favorite houses, Frederic Church’s Olana - specifically seeing this page of color swatches Church made for the house and comparing it to one of the original sketches shared with us after our first meeting for our mural.
It’s always interesting to see an artist’s process and the dots they connect - and how a small page of sketches and colors can translate to a larger composition.
Adding to this - aside from the colors being eerily similar…- I have a tile on my bedside table from Lockwood de Forest, one of Church’s friends and collaborators, that I purchased at Olana a few years back.

A wall of custom paper designed with forms the backdrop for our bed - crowned with fantastic papyrus finials by - all sits directly opposite a large window that keeps the gold clouds illuminated, reflective and ever changing
The paisley bedside tables came from an auction at and perfectly fit (after I had the baseboard removed on either side!)
We found the tassels and throw (which we upholstered the headboard with) in the Medina of Tangier while traveling with

The first thing you see when you walk into cover star 's 450-square-foot Chelsea apartment is a purple mural painted by New York artist, inspired by an original 1938 building advertisement that offered residents a scenic entry as a move-in option. As Cullum's partner previously told us, “How can you be anything but happy in that apartment when you have a crab wearing stilettos?"

Here, Cullum walks us through how it all came together. Take a tour of the rest of the apartment at the link in our bio.
"This place is so dense and full," designer William Cullum says of the Chelsea studio he shares with his partner. "Each thing, individually, is special to me, and special to us." At 450 square feet, this petite apartment holds a mural painted by, objects gathered from years of travel and collecting, and not a single empty table. The future has always had a knack for hiding in plain sight—in a 450-square-foot Chelsea studio, say, or a bronze foundry in Milan, or a sun-drenched California hillside built by hand. This month, we went looking for it with our inaugural Rising Stars list, celebrating the next generation of interior designers, artists, architects, and makers changing the way we live. We found them everywhere—as we tend to.

On our cover, designer William Cullum —a Thomas Jayne alum who recently launched his own firm—turns a classic Emery Roth studio into a jewel box of personal mythology (see: a mural stitched with alligators and evil eyes and a gold-tiled bathroom channeling Diana Ross–era Chelsea). He shares it with his partner and their cat Leopold, and not a single surface is wasted.

Inside the issue, Milan-based artist brings her bronze sorcery stateside for the first time. builds a rugged, artisan-made hideaway in California. Designer makes his Elle Decor debut inside an I.M. Pei landmark, and a new wave of private clubs proves that hospitality is having a big design moment. We also ask the important questions: Does a room have an age? What's the new frontier for natural stone? Can a dog bed be genuinely beautiful? (It can.) These are the names to know and the ideas already in motion. We see the future, and it looks very good. 🔮

After 5 months of working from home, I have an office!
My desk - which deserves its own post - I have had it in storage for over a year, purchased via LiveAuctioneers while we were with gazing at the Alhambra - is covered with favorite inspiring things:
-A bronze pen holder that was on my bedside table in my childhood bedroom
-A Gothic Revival letter holder from the estate of Lee B Anderson purchased at years ago
-A new and magical marbled sample by
-A favorite tile in the most amazing arsenic green, a gift from
-Coupled with a custom tile by for one of my favorite projects and people
-A cat portrait by artist and friend
& the two most recent additions - both rats - a diamond 🐀 brooch for prosperity from and a felt🐀 which found its way into one of the many bags moved from the apartment, certainly put there by little Leopold to remind me of him everyday 💜🐆
