On Day 45, we continued our journey further south. Along the road we kept spotting these massive dunes — exactly the kind of Sahara scenery you picture in your head. Of course, we had to stop and climb one of them on foot. The sand was incredibly fine and soft, perfect to walk on barefoot.

TAG 045 // Kurzer Stopp in den Dünen
An Tag 45 sind wir weiter Richtung Süden aufgebrochen. Neben der Straße haben wir immer wieder diese riesigen Dünen gesehen — genau so, wie man sich die Sahara vorstellt. Natürlich haben wir angehalten und sind zu Fuß hochgelaufen. Der Sand war extrem fein und weich, super angenehm, barfuß darauf zu laufen.

On Day 43, we continued our route through the Sahara toward Ben Amera — the second-highest monolith in the world (633 m). An incredibly impressive sight rising out of the desert. Unfortunately, the timing didn’t work out for us to climb it, but even from below it was a special place to visit.
Afterwards, the track led us through deep sand and some steep climbs before we finally made it out of the dunes and back onto paved roads. We were relieved that our turbo-hose fix had held and that we made it through the toughest sand without further issues.

TAG 043 // Ben Amera
An Tag 43 ging es weiter durch die Sahara Richtung Ben Amera — dem zweithöchsten Monolithen der Welt (633 m). Ein unglaublich beeindruckender Fels mitten in der Wüste. Leider hat unser Timing nicht gepasst, um ihn zu besteigen, aber auch von unten war es etwas Besonderes dort zu sein.
Im Anschluss ging es noch durch tiefen Sand und einige steile Anstiege, bevor wir schließlich wieder asphaltierte Straßen erreichten. Wir waren ziemlich erleichtert, dass unser Fix am Turboschlauch gehalten hat und wir den tiefen Sand ohne weitere Probleme hinter uns lassen konnten.

On Day 42, after our first night deep in the Sahara, we continued heading east. A few hours into the drive, the first real issue appeared: the boost hose at the turbo of the 130 burst. It had been replaced before the trip, but it must have had a production flaw.
We managed a quick temporary fix with self-fusing tape, but it only held for a few kilometers. So we tried again — this time with a tire patch and several layers of tape. Luckily, that fix held for the rest of the day, even though getting a proper replacement part in Mauritania or Senegal is nearly impossible.
Getting stuck was also part of the experience. First, the 130 sank briefly into the sand, but we got it out quickly. Then got buried so deep that all six of us had to dig for over an hour. Frame, axles — everything was sitting on the sand.
After finally getting both cars free again, we continued driving and set up camp for the night.

TAG 042 // Erste Probleme in der Sahara
An Tag 42 ging es nach unserer ersten Nacht mitten in der Sahara weiter Richtung Osten. Nach ein paar Stunden tauchte dann das erste größere Problem auf: Der Ladedruckschlauch direkt am Turbolader des 130ers platzte. Er war zwar vor der Reise erneuert worden, hatte aber wohl einen Produktionsfehler.
Mit selbstverschweißendem Tape konnten wir ihn zunächst provisorisch reparieren, doch die Lösung hielt nur wenige Kilometer. Also versuchten wir es erneut — diesmal mit einem Reifenflicken und mehreren Lagen Tape. Zum Glück hielt diese Reparatur bis zum Abend, auch wenn ein richtiges Ersatzteil in Mauretanien oder Senegal quasi nicht zu bekommen ist.
Auch festfahren blieb nicht aus. Zuerst steckte der 130er kurz fest, was wir schnell lösen konnten. Danach saßen so tief im Sand, dass wir mit sechs Leuten über eine Stunde schaufeln mussten. Rahmen, Achsen — alles lag auf dem Sand auf.
Als beide Autos endlich frei waren, konnten wir weiterfahren und unser Nachtlager aufschlagen.

On Day 41, we started our 400+ km journey into the Sahara.
Ahead of us: roughly 550 km without a gas station and more than 400 km of pure sand with no roads at all.
After doing our research, we expected about double our normal fuel consumption.
So we filled everything — tanks, jerrycans, plus an extra 22L of fuel per car in old water canisters.
The vastness of the Sahara impressed us immediately.
We had an amazing time finding our way through the sand and carving our own tracks.
We set up camp behind a dune with a wide-open view into the desert and a beautiful sunset to end the day.

TAG 041 // Auf in die Sahara
An Tag 41 haben wir unseren 400+ km Trip in die Sahara gestartet.
Vor uns lagen ca. 550 km ohne Tankstelle und über 400 km reiner Sand ohne jegliche Straße.
Nach guter Vorbereitung sind wir davon ausgegangen, ungefähr den doppelten Verbrauch zu haben.
Also haben wir alles vollgetankt, alle Kanister gefüllt und zusätzlich weitere 22L pro Auto in alten Wasserkanistern mitgenommen.
Die Weite der Sahara hat uns sofort beeindruckt.
Es hat mega Spaß gemacht, unseren eigenen Weg durch den Sand zu finden und durch die Dünen zu fahren.
Unser Camp haben wir hinter einer Düne aufgeschlagen — mit weitem Blick in die Wüste und einem schönen Sonnenuntergang.

Day 38 was spent driving from Dakhla to the Mauritanian border.
We camped off the road behind a couple of dunes, about 10 minutes from the crossing.
On Day 39, we started early, hoping to be among the first — but many others had slept in line, and the big overland truck/bus with 24 people was already there too.
The whole day at the border was filled with chaos, pushing, and constant bribery attempts.
Unlike many others, we didn’t use a “fixer” — those people who speed up the process by bribing border officers.
We pushed through without paying any bribes, relying only on patience and a bit of assertiveness.
And in the end, we were just as fast as those who paid.
After more than nine exhausting hours, we finally crossed into Mauritania and headed to Villa Maguela near Nouadhibou — a great meeting spot for travelers entering from Western Sahara.
There, we met the truck/bus group again and a few other travelers.

TAG 038 & 039 // Grenze nach Mauretanien
Tag 38 haben wir damit verbracht, von Dakhla zur Grenze nach Mauretanien zu fahren.
Geschlafen haben wir abseits der Straße hinter ein bis zwei Dünen, nur rund zehn Minuten von der Grenze entfernt.
An Tag 39 ging es früh los — in der Hoffnung, vorne mit dabei zu sein.
Viele hatten aber schon in der Schlange übernachtet, inklusive des großen Overland-LKW/Busses mit 24 Reisenden.
Der ganze Tag war geprägt von Chaos, Drängeln und ständigen Bestechungsversuchen.
Wir haben bewusst keinen Fixer benutzt — also niemanden, der die Grenzer gegen Geld „überzeugt“, alles zu beschleunigen.
Stattdessen haben wir es ohne Bestechung, nur mit Geduld und Durchsetzungsvermögen geschafft.
Und am Ende waren wir etwa genauso schnell wie die, die bezahlt haben.
Nach über neun anstrengenden Stunden konnten wir endlich weiterfahren — zur Villa Maguela bei Nouadhibou, einem schönen Treffpunkt für Reisende hinter der Grenze.
Dort haben wir auch den LKW/Bus und einige andere wiedergetroffen.

We spent Days 34 to 37 in Dakhla.
Originally, we planned to take a kitesurfing course, but the prices were way too high — so instead we mostly waited and tried to relax. Unfortunately, the spot was super windy and very exposed, so “relaxing” was limited.
In an abandoned restaurant, we met the last remaining cook, who agreed to prepare something for us. He ended up cooking the best tajine we’ve had on the entire trip — incredibly kind guy, really trying his best, and the food was amazing.
There was no light, so we used a battery floodlight and our headlamps to brighten the place up.
Over the next days, he brought us fresh bread in the mornings and coffee in the afternoons.
On the road, we also saw camels being transported on the back of an old pickup — crazy to witness how the animals are moved around here.

TAG 034–037 // Warten auf Visum in Dakhla
Die Tage 34 bis 37 haben wir in Dakhla verbracht.
Eigentlich wollten wir die Zeit für einen Kitesurfkurs nutzen, aber das war uns eindeutig zu teuer. Also haben wir vor allem gewartet und etwas entspannt — wobei der Spot extrem windig und offen war, also nur bedingt entspannt.
In einem verlassenen Restaurant haben wir den letzten verbliebenen Koch kennengelernt, der auf Anfrage doch noch gekocht hat.
Er hat uns die beste Tajine des gesamten Trips gemacht — super lieb, total bemüht und richtig gutes Essen.
Da es kein Licht gab, haben wir mit einem Akku-Baustrahler und unseren Stirnlampen ausgeholfen.
In den nächsten Tagen hat er uns morgens mit Brot und nachmittags mit Kaffee versorgt.
Unterwegs haben wir zudem Kamele auf einer alten Pritsche gesehen — Wahnsinn, wie die armen Tiere hier transportiert werden.

Day 33 was all about covering distance toward the Mauritanian border.
We spent almost the entire day driving and ended up for the night at an impressive cliff directly above the Atlantic.
In the evening, we just watched the waves crash against the cliffs, and at night we fell asleep to the sound of the ocean.
A beautiful spot — totally random and perfectly placed along our route.

TAG 033 // Weg nach Dakhla & Mauretanien
Tag 33 haben wir genutzt, um weiter Richtung Grenze nach Mauretanien zu fahren.
Wir waren den ganzen Tag unterwegs und haben schließlich an einer beeindruckenden Steilküste direkt über dem Atlantik übernachtet.
Abends haben wir den Wellen zugeschaut, wie sie gegen die Felsen prallen, und nachts dem Meeresrauschen gelauscht.
Ein wunderschöner Ort, der zufällig genau auf unserer Route lag.

Days 29 to 32 were all about surfing.
We stayed at a campground in Tamraght so we could leave the cars parked all day and just focus on the waves.
On the first day, we booked a few hours with surf instructors — who, according to themselves, had a “strong fish” and a rough night behind them. Let’s just say… we probably could’ve saved the money.
But it was still fun, and for getting back into it (or surfing for the first time), it definitely helped.
Over the next few days, everyone felt a bit exhausted here and there, so we didn’t all surf every day — but it was still a great time by the ocean.

TAG 029–032 // Surfen in Tamraght
Die Tage 29 bis 32 haben wir mit Surfen und Zeit am Strand verbracht.
Wir haben einen Campingplatz in Tamraght gewählt, damit wir die Autos den ganzen Tag stehen lassen und uns voll aufs Surfen konzentrieren konnten.
Am ersten Tag haben wir ein paar Stunden Unterricht genommen — die Lehrer hatten nach eigenen Angaben jedoch einen „strong Fisch“ und eine harte Nacht hinter sich. Das Geld hätten wir uns vermutlich sparen können.
Trotzdem war’s lustig und gut, um wieder reinzukommen bzw. überhaupt das erste Mal zu surfen.
In den folgenden Tagen waren wir immer mal wieder etwas platt, sodass nicht jeder jeden Tag aufs Board konnte — aber die Zeit am Meer war trotzdem richtig gut.

We spent Days 27 to 29 in Marrakech. For a change — and because it’s simply easier — we booked an Airbnb. Having a real shower, a proper toilet, and the chance to wash some clothes felt amazing.
We especially loved the markets: the colors, the smells, the chaos, the craftsmanship — all super impressive.
But after three days in the big city, I was also happy to move on again.
As exciting as Marrakech is, for me it’s just a bit too dirty, too loud, too chaotic, and far too touristy.

TAG 027–029 // Marrakech
Tag 27 bis 29 haben wir in Marrakech verbracht. Zur Abwechslung — und weil es deutlich einfacher ist — haben wir uns ein Airbnb genommen. Endlich wieder richtig duschen, eine normale Toilette benutzen und ein paar Klamotten waschen.
Besonders gut gefallen haben uns die Märkte: Farben, Gerüche, Chaos, Handwerk — wirklich beeindruckend.
Nach drei Tagen Großstadt war ich aber auch froh, wieder unterwegs zu sein.
So spannend Marrakech auch ist, für mich ist es einfach zu dreckig, zu laut, zu chaotisch und zu touristisch.

Days 25 and 26 took us deeper through the beautiful Atlas Mountains, heading toward our next big destination: Marrakech.
At one stop, we found a small puppy — wet, freezing, and completely lost. We warmed him up and really hope he’ll make it, as he kept wandering onto the road without understanding the danger. Leaving him behind felt heavy, but we had no real way to help more.
We continued and spent the night at a tiny but beautiful campsite at over 2,300 m altitude.
The next day, we drove on through winding mountain roads, stunning scenery, and eventually into the open landscapes leading toward Marrakech.

TAG 025 & 026 // Weiter durchs Atlasgebirge nach Marrakech
An Tag 25 und 26 ging es weiter tief durchs schöne Atlasgebirge, immer Richtung Marrakech.
Bei einem Stopp fanden wir einen kleinen Welpen — nass, zitternd und völlig verloren. Wir haben ihn aufgewärmt und hoffen sehr, dass er es schafft, da er ständig auf der Straße herumgelaufen ist und die Gefahr nicht verstand. Mit einem mulmigen Gefühl fuhren wir weiter.
Übernachtet haben wir auf einem sehr kleinen, aber schönen Campingplatz auf über 2.300 m Höhe.
Am nächsten Tag ging es weiter durch Serpentinen, großartige Berglandschaften und schließlich hinein ins offene Terrain vor Marrakech.
