Amsterdam Centraal is a sorting machine.
That was my discovery photographing it for National Geographic. Architect Pierre Cuypers designed a cathedral of movement, but what the station actually does is sort: those coming and going, the haves and the have-nots, the faithful and the faithless, the lost and the found.

The May issue is on shelves across the Netherlands now. My work is also exhibited in the West Passage of the station itself.

Grateful to, Bram Mullink, and the team for the beautiful publication, with excellent writing by

Many thanks to and the team for bringing this together.

And thanks to and for the access.

Thank you, for being there every step of the way.
The real question isn't which energy source we choose, but how much of the Earth and its people we're willing to sacrifice to meet our needs.

That's what I explored on stage at the National Geographic Summit in Amsterdam this weak, tracing my work from the Russian Arctic to the Sahara and the reindeer herders of Sweden paying the price for the green transition.

Grateful to share the stage with. Many thanks to and for bringing us together.

The conversation continues. My exhibition with is open now in the West Passage of Amsterdam Central -- free, 24/7. And pick up the May Dutch edition of National Geographic Magazine for more.

Spider silk is one of the strongest materials in the world. Weight for weight, it outperforms steel. It is elastic, biocompatible, and extraordinarily tough. Yet for centuries it remained impossible to produce at scale because spiders cannot be farmed. They fight. They eat each other.

Following the scientists attempting to change that, I photographed how gene-edited silkworms are engineered to spin spider silk, opening a path to mass-manufacture materials that evolution spent millions of years refining.

The implications reach far beyond textiles: medical sutures, artificial ligaments, aerospace composites.

This image of a dead reindeer calf was selected by the 2026 Pictures of the Year International (POYi), a U.S. journalism organization.

When I began documenting Sweden’s green transition, I expected a story of progress. I found one. But I also found a consequence rarely discussed: the cost borne by Indigenous communities.

For thousands of years, the Sámi have herded reindeer across the Arctic. Today that balance is breaking. Unseasonal winter rain freezes over lichen, sealing off their winter food. Mines, rail lines, and wind farms fragment migration routes. Calves weaken. Some die from exhaustion and malnutrition.

“The reindeer always knew the way,” a Sámi elder told me. Not anymore.

This work is part of my National Geographic Explorer project examining Arctic resource frontiers and their human consequences. I thank the Sami families for trusting me to their stories.
For the February 2026 National Geographic story on beer, I set out to visualize a frontier of brewing science: yeast strains that generate flavor without alcohol.

I photographed the cover image inside a beer lab in Leuven, building a still life within a dense thicket of steel, glass, and tubing.

To reveal beer bubbles and foam structure, I lit a label-less Stella Artois 0.0% and shaped highlights across the surrounding instruments, with lighting suggestions from my friend and National Geographic colleague Mark Thiessen.

Beer without alcohol shouldn’t taste this good. Living in Brussels, often called the beer capital of the world, and I recently came across non-alcoholic beers with great richness and complexity. This wasn’t supposed to happen: de-alcoholisation is understood to strip flavor along with ethanol.

So what changed?

The search led us to renowned beer scientist Kevin Verstrepen, who is at the forefront of identifying yeast strains that ferment fully while producing little to no alcohol, thus keeping the exceptionally range of aromas in the beer.

We spent time photographing and filming Kevin and his team, and brewers ranging from craft producers to — all working to make Belgium’s UNESCO beer culture a living experiment.

This Boxing Day, we’re highlighting powerful moments from the Russian Arctic with National Geographic Explorer Justin Jin, who captures immersive stories through photography, film and writing, shedding light on our rapidly changing world.

Nenets Chums at Dusk:
At dusk, smoke rises from chums scattered across the tundra, forming the cultural landscape of the Nenets people. For centuries, families have migrated with their reindeer, carrying their homes and knowledge across the Arctic. Often labelled “empty,” this land holds generations of memory, movement, and resilience.

Reindeer Herd in Motion:
Reindeer surge through blowing snow, pulling not just sleds, but an entire way of life. For the Nenets, herding shapes movement, memory, and survival across vast Arctic distances. Today, ancient migration routes face growing pressure from industrial development.

Nenets Boy Climbing The Chum:
A young Nenets boy turns his family’s tent into a place of play on the open tundra. Here, childhood unfolds in motion, learning the land through movement, weather, and animals. Small, everyday moments reveal the quiet strength of a culture built on survival and continuity.
