My daughter is turning 3, which means she will move on from Krippe soon. Like many parents in Germany, I applied through the portal to several kindergartens and felt incredibly lucky when we got an offer from one just a few minutes from our home.
We were so relieved. So excited. And honestly a bit pressured by the fear of “if we don’t take this, we might not get another place.”
So we went ahead, visited, and signed the contract.
Without asking enough questions.
Later, we realised something important: the concept didn’t really fit our child. It was an “offenes Konzept” — meaning children are free to choose activities for the whole day with very little structured, teacher-led guidance. While this works beautifully for some kids, it didn’t feel right for ours.
That’s when we started looking again… and thankfully found another kindergarten that felt like a much better match.
But by then, things got complicated. We didn’t cancel the first contract immediately out of fear of losing both options. We informed the new kindergarten that we would cancel the first one once they confirmed us—but they understandably didn’t proceed.
In the end, we learned a tough but valuable lesson:
Lesson: Don’t let urgency or fear make the decision for you.
Ask more questions. There are different concepts of kindergarten. Understand the pedagogy. Trust your child’s needs more than the pressure of “getting a spot.

You can grill in Germany… but not just anywhere. Many cities have “official BBQ spots,” so spontaneous park BBQs might get you a friendly reminder (or a fine) to move it to the right zone.

Feeding pigeons isn’t always a cute moment here 🕊️
In some cities it’s restricted because authorities are trying to keep public spaces cleaner and the bird population under control. That’s why many cities have feeding bans.
🗑️ Using someone else’s bin
That “free bin space” is not actually free 😄
Waste bins usually belong to specific households or buildings, so using someone else’s regularly can cause very German levels of complaint.

So, get all these documents ready in advance as it’s hard to organise them once you have your little one in this world:
✔️Birth certificate of your child
The first document you need to apply for is birth certificate of your new born( Geburtsurkunde)
➡️ One needs to apply at Standesamt for the birth certificate. If your hospital has the counter to apply for birth certificate, you can submit your documents there.
Documents to be submitted:
➡️ Duly filled form
➡️ Passport copy
➡️ marriage certificate of parents ( translated and authorized)
➡️Birth Certificate of parents if born in Germany
Note: It usually takes one week to get the birth certificate of a newborn. If you decide name of your child in advance, you can fill in the form in advance and keep the file ready.
You will receive 3 different copies of birth certificate- ➡️one for Krankenkasse
➡️one for yourself and
➡️one for Elterngeld.
✔️Passport
If you want to apply for Indian passport of your newborn, you will have to do that at the consulate/ embassy. Firstly birth registration will be done and then passport application. Other than common documents, you might need Meldebescheiningung of your kid from Bürgeramt.

If the newborn is eligible for German passport, then you will automatically receive a letter from the state.
✔️Aufenthaltstitel (Residence permit of your child)
Once you have passport and birth certificate of your child, you would be able to apply for residence card at the Ausländerbehörde. It can take 8-12 weeks to receive residence permit.
So,the entire process of getting residence permit can take atleast 3 months. It took 2.5 months in the case of my newborn because I prepared everything in advance and was lucky enough to get all the appointments in time.
