Every collection we pray for deliverance of the practical experimentation and developments that have become a staple and a trope as the years go by. Being known for his masterful use of denim, and his unique and concise tailoring skills; what we are afforded for Junya Watanabe’s Spring Summer 2025 collection is an impactful, refined and bold foray into Dressing-Up Denim. Combining silhouettes of traditionally formally tailored pieces with denim. Working with a range of collaborators from the likes of Trickers, Brooks Brothers, Levis, Innerbraum, New Balance, and even another tickle from Versace with use of their iconic silks and patterns. The breadth of design but clarity of vision is paralleled throughout the looks on debut here, with uniformed colour palettes of black, white or denim, and the occasional pop of colour.
Exceptionally unique in his production, what Junya Watanabe-san has done is produce a collection that, is objectively Stylish Tailoring and oh-so perfectly done. There are forms and silhouettes for a wide range of scenarios yet culminate under one umbrella to form a series of his iconic Juniforms. The transparency of universe created by the construction methods and use of materials is something so specific and pertinent to Watanabe-san that it keeps us coming back time and again. We are always satisfied and yet ever wanting more. More reconstruction, more patchworking, more experimentation. There seems to be no tiring or banality in the designs, with a constantly developing totality of his ideal man’s world.

Spikes. Tendrils. Undulating and Twisting Forms. Shapely Frames. A masterful foray into sculpture and fashion utilising an array of iconic motifs that we all have come to love as the expansion of expression and design continues. For his Fall Winter 2024 season Junya Watanabe has decided that he would delve into Expanding Forms, fusing together starkly clear sculptural elements with his signature style of design and working practices. A continued gaze across the collection itself accelerates the notion of unapologetically wearable art. Watanabe-sans iconic tailoring bound with monolithic obtuse shaping; rolls of leather and belting swirling and twisting between each other like alien-esque forms; light dresses framed with a maze of runs of architrave style box panelling; even hanging or suspended panelling that offers exceptionally vivid juxtapositions between typically associated designs of form and silhouette. What we do have is a continuation of expression and process that persists in being almost unparalleled in its purity and journey by provenance and dedication by specificity.
We know what we want from Junya Watanabe. But that absolutely does not mean we know what we will get as he debuts his latest works for the world to absorb and exhibit. Whilst he continues to work inside his own historically proven realms, the constant development and exploration that is proven season-again, takes on new bounds tackling three dimensional sculpture and the experience one has with such wearability of. Colliding delicacy and starkness there seems to be a translation of form and purpose that really does frame the body, or at least affords a ‘frame’ as if to be gazed upon as part of the art and sculpture itself. It is human nature to pay mind to the way one is exhibited and interpreted, with the structured nature creating direct links to the performative, being framed and being viewed.

Junya Watanabe is known for his patchworking and reconstructions. Taking the normal and everyday and accelerating its base existence. Creating entirely new and foreboding silhouettes and constructions that challenge the typically accepted norms and standard of functional and wearable adornment. Whilst in some seasons prior, Watanabe-san has opted to have elements of bridging inclusion between styles of clothing, tailoring, military, workwear, functional wear but only by element itself. This season Junya Watanabe for his Fall Winter 2024 collection has chosen to delve even deeper into construction for his MAN collection. Translating many proven motifs and practices from his Women’s collections, we see a bombardment of intricately and beautifully constructed garments that can only be seen as a head nod to ever developing timeless and androgynous tastes. In Watanabe-sans words himself, this is Reconstructed Suiting. A challenge for no-one, but a puzzle to solve for the man himself. Just one of his many wonders is the strive to create so much more from the ordinary.
Radicalization is a practice which, when pertaining to Junya Watanabe, is best demonstrated through its physical provenance. Instantly recognizable as pieces in their own right, and the special elements used for construction too, the story is in the visual evidence that Watanabe-san has chosen to imbue into his works. Although predominantly tackling the aforementioned big coats; the contrast between wide and revealing and more fitted and covered is present and exemplary across every look. Junya Watanabe’s men are always ready for business. Big Bizniz. It’s a self-fulfillment of importance and possibility. For Watanabe-san to have an armoire filled with such special motifs, being able to explore and experiment with them indefinitely takes creativity and dedication to new thresholds. We will continue to see the acceleration of menswear and be thankful it is Junya Watanabe that takes us by the hand to lead.

Bringing a deluge of sculptural and architecturally charged experiments of adornment; Watanabe-san employs a plethora of materials, cuts, patterning, and even dabbles in the convergence through exploration of multi-faceted fashion styles. A bringing together of the archaic, the past, with the modern and the futuristic. Utilising different origami methods throughout the collection, there is a clear cut focus on manipulation of the movement, comprehension and interpretation of silhouette via the use of drapery. Jaunting down the runway, each look has an aura of ‘putting in the work’ that is expected of any Junya piece, change, progression and evolution, a central motif to this season. Junya Watanabe for his Spring Summer 2024 collection continues to develop his structurally baffling yet conceptually poignant works. The ability to disperse such new yet iconically timeless works in a terribly charged trend following design world; is incredibly refreshing and a nuisance typically nodded to when Junya is on the mind.
Black in itself is an imperfect yet perfect tone. Watanabe-san chooses to utilize black throughout its tonality, using natural textile difference to provide a depth and unrivalled compilation to cast forward his journey of creation. Choosing to adopt other colours like red, blue, white and more, Junya offers a refined yet unique play on the body. From pyramid extending jodhpurs, to eccentric grandeur dresses, even the thought and use of hair and make-up design confirmed his still-leaning punk mentality. Harshly chopped and shaped almost bowl-cut hair compliments the minimalistic make-up whilst paralleling in visage the dark aesthetic of black and tonal contact lenses that widen the iris, paired with lips and colours to cut through or compliment the garb. Watanabe-san has continued to employ masterfully refined techniques of past seasons, and translate them to new and bold derivatives that stand outright in their own world. We want more panels. We want more fun!

Unexpected but unapologetically Junya; his typical menswear shifted to envelope more of his experimental and ever-masterfully orchestrated works, most usually seen in his Women’s Ready-to-Wear collections. A sign that Watanabe-san really believes in himself when he stated ‘I want to design something innovative, something that no one has ever seen before, something that will even change someone’s life and mindset.’ In a recent interview for his 30th Anniversary. Choosing to utilise and employ his patchworking and reconstruction practices in a way which further emboldens his designs. So having the male form as a base to work from, and whilst incorporating more androgynous features and pieces of adornment in the collection, Junya Watanabe for his Spring Summer 2024 collection tackles new challenges whilst bringing forward his eponymous work on his ever winding journey. Punk is still Punk, and Junya has the field to play with for his vision to come to light on the day of the reveal.
Utilizing an array of his iconic design practices, Watanabe-san develops silhouettes and forms that would be typical to see on his women’s runways in a more aptly masculine way. Long-line overcoats and tunics cinched and paneled to offer a more palatable ease of movement for the eventuality of action. The choice to incorporate and work in a genderless or androgynous way, with skirted pieces and specific designs utilized in his women’s collections, the heavy leather work in patchworks and long-lines, and reworked biker technical jackets that can be seen here, and in the women’s Fall Winter 2022 and Spring Summer 2023. Continuing on his journey of innovative omnipotence, Watanabe-san has brought together a badass menagerie of stylish looks, afforded to those which self-importance seeks, and where stylish functionality reigns. He may have built upon his designs from past seasons somewhat, for his MAN label, he has made leaps and bounds.

‘Kashmir’ by Led Zeppelin; an iconic track and a wonderfully brooding, foreboding and mysterious journey referencing space and stars, travel, exploration of identity and revelation of interpretation of journey; is a magnificent parallel for the physical debuting of, what was refused to be called a collection having not completed his collaborative works, the Junya Watanabe Fall Winter 2023 show. Focusing on the technical and the grandiose-ing of functionality and utilising informed techniques to experiment with all manner of synthetic materials, there is boundless silhouette and form changes throughout. The strutting models made up with metal functional rings and braided hair pieces to resemble a helmet in some cases; as well as further collaboration with Inneraum on armoured face masks, bags and accessories to complete the Doomsday, Mad Max, Cyberpunk-esque theme we can hark to in thought.
Watanabe-san said in a recent interview with System in their current magazine that ‘I want to design something innovative, something that no one has ever seen before, something that will even change someone’s life and mindset.’ The continual development of practice and creation across his seasons is only strengthened and bolstered by such dedication to mindset of working and design. He has proven that the technical and the typically travel-sturdy can continue to be manipulated and redesigned, remade and reimagined as something suitable for the most arduous and practically challenging moments, whilst allowing it to pass through the veil freely into the realms of sophistication. Instead of the few typical discussion points about a dress one may usually have; with Watanabe-san you can ponder to no end the uses and affordability’s such adornments will offer you. Who doesn’t love clothes you have to think about; and Junya does enjoy engaging with his audience through the physical creations.

Promenading in a clean and minimal space which is much a reflection of the collection to show, the models don a full wardrobe array of Watanabe-sans new and updated everyday man. Muted and chic yet in stark contrast to the season prior it almost solely relies on tonal blacks and greys, with flashes of colour in some lining. There is structured and robust framed bags and utilitarian goods and garment accompaniments or features, to slim strongly-formed tailoring and the oversized, even haranguing in eponymous looks from well-hailed collections gone by; workman, biker manic, fishing and hiking galore, combat ready and sportsman to name a few by theme. For Fall Winter 2023, Junya Watanabe MAN oozes the very essence of luxury elegance that CAN and WILL make a difference to the living lives of his men. The future of living protection is here, and one must be prepared for any and all hardships no matter the time or place, so offering such sleek utility in an everyday package will be sure to catch the hearts and minds of collectors and fans alike.
Incorporating the chic sublime with the advanced functional, Junya Watanabe has chosen to create an enticing super-version of the everyday man, one that with such a refined palette need not even worry about potentially compromised adornment or the wear it purveys. It will and does last by fact; with Junya’s debut pieces surviving 31 years so far being enough evidence, let alone the living proven use we can attest to as followers of his. He really has created a unique robust luxury that one could throw hard against a stone wall and it would bounce off as fresh as ever. People forget that luxury and elegance doesn’t exclusively mean delicate sheer silks and floating draped wools; as Watanabe-san has proven times before, and again in his most creatively tuned minimaximalist collection. More can be better, especially when you are the one who owns it.

The first collection debut shown in Paris since 2020; Junya Watanabe chose to continue foregrounding his love of the subculture and explore the extravagance of the 80’s New Romantics through his own modern interpretation, for his Spring Summer 2023 collection. Instantly recognized and noticeable is the hair design of the models, made up into variously shaped and segmented crimped volumes of coloured and toned hair; make-up like pastel portraits or in some cases resembling costume-esque or theatre performing design. Two motifs both commonly utilized by New Romantics, especially in the British scene as notably documented by photographer Graham Smith. Something coincidentally prominent when considering Watanabe-sans record of Anglophilia. As evidenced throughout his seasonal works, he goes ALL-IN with his exploration of depth and specific focus of ‘theme’ or ‘world’, that is clear by actual context of our preconceived understandings.
This collection is somewhat an expanse of some of Watanabe-sans most revered women’s works of the past, by having a specific world in which to design through. It allowed him to have a wider breadth of the specific thematic subculture of New Romanticism and documented history of, to experiment with in his way. The elaborate ethos and mindset of such an intrepid culture follower would surely be appeased and elated with what was on offer now-if-then. Despite often sticking to a theme, Junya-san will always produce a collection which would stand on its own feet without the name on the label and stay honest with the reference and the origin it embodies.

American pop iconography and references from the likes of Basquiat, Warhol, Haring and Lichtenstein, amongst others; combined with logo’s from conglomerates such as Coca-Cola, Honda and Netflix, Junya Watanabe for his Spring Summer 2023 collection extends the wardrobe of the everyman ever further, by offering a playful yet tasteful snapshot into modern ‘culted’ Americana. Paired with his distinct patchworking and always present hard-wearing textiles, it shows us a snapshot from Watanabe-sans mind of a pop-centric and street oriented instantly recognizable American scene. As if one could be stood on a street corner simply watching the passersby as they mill around and carry out whatever task was undertaken in their moment.
Although this collection clearly isn’t trying to turn menswear on its head, something we understand by evidence and nature of Watanabe-sans working practice for MAN; it does export a specific and eclectic visage of America to the world, for all and for those who otherwise won’t be going any time soon. Imbued with cultural references, promoting the new American Dream in a way that’s accessible for all. One that allows for and supports the creativity of everymans soul. Experimenting with tradition and expanding an otherwise usually overlooked wardrobe with the elevated and focused everyday wear.

The Rugged Goth WILL indeed, go to the ball. With yet again another unparalleled and un-predicted display of intricate, overworked, multi-layered and striking garments and ensembles; as Junya Watanabe’s Fall Winter 2022 collection; in what can seemingly be conceived as an almost apocalyptic approach to reconstruction and combination of textile and execution. The use of utilitarian materials, elements and components lending its physical form and tropes to the notions of elegance and charm. A maximal AND minimal offering, somehow working and being understood to the Watanabe-san lover despite the antinomy of such design styles. It is something we have come to almost expect to see albeit served to us in a new special Junya-package across different collections. This collection was inspired by Plight (The Spiraling of Winter Ghosts), an experimental collaborative piece by David Sylvian and Holger Czukay from the 1980s, with Watanabe-san saying he found the subtitle ‘poetic and beautiful’ noting the reasoning behind the track ‘is exactly the same as our feeling about creation.’
———-
From the avid fans perception of the collection, it seems as though Watanabe-san did indeed have one of his main focuses in pre-and-production as being waste, or the want to have no waste from the constructions designed and made, an imperative factor to consider in today’s climate and going forward. It’s the consideration of construction that really starts to help us as viewers understand what must have been a pain staking process to ensure that each piece exists wholly in its own creative jumble; with sections seeming impossible without actually wearing or being in hand. Something we are always delivered in our quarterly dose of Junya.
